Yay Peppers!!! This place is so fun! One word of advice for new customers. This is NOT Mexican food, this is Mexicali food! That means it is not authentic. There are no carnitas, no little street tacos, or burritos that feed an entire family. What they do have is kick-ass margaritas, salsas that you cannot stop eating, and incredibly good seafood dishes. Stick with the specials menu (which is very large) and you won't be disappointed. Like the smoked Gouda quesadilla or salmon tacos. Yum!! If you have room, get the sopapillas for dessert. Little puffed, deep fried pieces of heaven sprinkled with cinnamon and honey. The atmosphere is lively and comfortable, great for dates and parties. Awesome bartenders.

We visited Pepper's on a one night stay in Pacific Grove. Service was good but not great. It was pretty busy and perhaps our server was overworked per his abilities. We tried the corn chowder and thought it was awful, some weird flavor profile I couldn't quite get over. Ate a few bites because it was $5 but couldn't even eat half. Hubby had highly modified chicken nachos and thought they were really good. I tried the mushroom and artichoke enchiladas. I ordered 2 and should have went with one; the plate was enormous. Black beans were good but had a pile of onions on top, not really my thing. Rice was ok, nothing great. Wish I would have known the enchiladas came with mole sauce as I'm not a fan and wouldn't have ordered it if I had know. Wish we had the chance to try it again and do something different but for now, 3 stars is the best I can do.

Ah, it was fine I guess. The margaritas were good, but the food wasn't memorable. There are better options around the area. This is definitely Mexican/Mexi-Cali food for white people...they need to cool it on the cheddar cheese. Chile Verde wasn't spicy at all, despite the warning on the menu. I would come back for a drink, but not to eat.

Dinner at Peppers tonight was amazing. We have a new fav restaurant! I had Prawn Fajitas with flour tortillas, rice and black beans and my husband had a Large Chicken Tostada. That's after we devoured 2 baskets of freshly fried Tortilla Chips served with two salsas (Verde green and roasted tomatillo red) while sipping on a Blood Orange Margarita and two Ultimate Margaritas (Patron Silver, Patron Citronge and hand made margarita mix). For dessert we shared a bowl of gourmet Coconut Fudge Macadamia Nut Ice Cream which was perfect after spicy food. Outstanding dinner and outstanding service!!!

I'd driven by this place a few times but finally checked it out the other night. It's pretty much the kind of place it looks like from the outside, which is exactly what I was hoping for. Excellent and fast service! The restaurant is set up nicely with cheerful decor and specials that change frequently. They have a lot of seafood options which I haven't tried yet, but they all seem like they could be delicious. My group tried the artichoke and mushroom enchilada, the chile verde tamale and the chile verde plate. Everything was great. I only deduct one star because my bar for Mexican food is so high and this place was close to greatness, but still lacked the special depth of flavor you can find in a really excellent Mexican place. That said, the tamale was moist and the masa was very flavorful, but a bit dense for my tastes (see, being very picky here); the enchilada sauces were delicious and the fillings great, but they used either flour or flour/corn combo for the tortilla and it didn't quite work with the delicateness of the sauces; no complaints about the chile verde. Beans and rice were good, but I'm not so picky there. Margaritas looks great, but I haven't had a chance to try. I wish they had more beers on tap, but they had Lagunitas IPA which makes everything ok by me. So in the end, great for dinner with good service, nice ambiance, and good Mexican, but if you're serious, you can find more exciting Mexican elsewhere.

We went here after a long day of driving from Orange County and then being at the aquarium on a recommendation from a friend and it was perfect. We waited about 20 minutes in the bar and I had the blood orange margarita...so yummy. My daughter had the corn chowder and loved it. I had grilled prawn fajitas, which were excellent. My husband had a cheese enchilada with green sauce and a beef taco. He said the taco was so good that he'd drive back up here just to eat it. All in all, it was a great meal and it was nice and close to our B&B in Pacific Grove.

Service was good..Food was awful. Zero flavor shrimp fajitas. Keep on driving by this one. It's expensive for Mexican, and overall just not good.

So we've come back a couple of times since my first review. Food has been good (as it was before) but the service has been awesome! As a matter of fact it was such good service that one of the times we tipped our server 50%. She deserved it! In my opinion, service can completely make or break a night out. I'm really happy we decided to go back:)

This place is the best!!! By far my favorite mexican food anywhere hands down. We live in Santa Cruz but my wife and I occasionally stay at a B&B in Pacific Grove that is less than a block away and I look forward more to my Carne Asada and blood orange margarita at Peppers then the time at the B&B (sad I know). We tend to sit at the bar as they serve the full menu (unlike some restaurants) and people watch. All the bartenders are great to chat with and the whole staff seems very friendly. We have been about 6 or 8 times and not a bad experience or meal so far. This is a must when within even 20 miles of PG!

Service was fantastic but the food wasn't something to boast about. I ordered a Jamaican shrimp dish with a mango and tomato salsa. I wanted something with spice and thought the word 'Jamaican' would mean it'd have a jerk flavor. NOPE. Mild. Tasty, but not what I was looking for. And since we were in a bit of a rush to catch a movie, I didn't bother sending it bad. Like I said, it did taste good. My lady ordered some chicken. VERY dry and not flavorful at all. But again, we didn't have time to send it back. Fortunately, the salsas that came with the unlimited chips was excellent, and their margaritas were perfectly to my liking. And we just got the house mix on the rocks. Authentic Mexican? Meh, sorta. Worth visiting once or twice? I guess. But if you want more for your money food-wise, I'd stick to the joints in Seaside.

Gringo Mexican food. Or better known as Tex-Mex. I usually prefer authentic Mexican food but this place seems to do a great job with what they do. Maybe it's because I find it nostalgic to go there, my parents used to take me there sometimes when I was a kid. The crispy chicken tacos taste like they did back then and I always order them when I go. Great place to sit at the bar and have a few drinks while you wait for your table. Chips and two different types of salsa is definitely a plus! This place is a bit on the pricey side but I feel it's worth it.

Ate here last weekend based upon the yelp reviews. We were pleased with all of our food. We ate: Chicken Enchiladas Chicken Burrito Fish of the Day Tacos Everything was cooked properly and tasted great. Our server was friendly and knowledgable and it was a busy place on a Saturday night (always a good sign).

My girl and I have been coming on Fridays for quite sometime. Outside of the long wait everything else is fantastic. Service is always great and the food is always great. My girl chooses different items but I always choose the smothered sausage. GREAT

This is pretty standard non-Mexican Mexican food restaurant. If you're at all picky about your mexican food then I wouldn't come here. If you simply love Mexican food in any way, shape, or form then this is a great place. The marinated skirt steak in my tacos was amazing. The rice was rather atypical for a mexican restaurant but it was still ok. The beans were beans. The chips and salsa were chips and salsa.

My only downside? Long wait! Get a reservation, it's not a huge place and it's popular! Beyond that... Excellent food. I usually dislike enchiladas on a red sauce but this time, I forgot to ask for green... And loved it. The crispy taco had a home fried shell. The chips were good, and the green salsa was spicy but so good I kept coming back for more, burning tongue not withstanding. My brother had the beef enchilada, and two tamales. The beef was tender and delicious. He said the tamales were excellent too. My mother had a soft tacos plate, beef as well... Again, tender beef and the sauce was just incredible. Dad had the enchiladas as well, and agreed on how good they are. For dessert, we shared the sopapillas and the Mexican chocolate cake. The sopapillas are huge, and come with I've cream and a caramel sauce. Delicious! The cake is very good, but neither my brother or I could figure out what made it Mexican, rather then just chocolate cake. Mom said she could taste cinnamon but neither of us could. That said, it comes with vanilla ice cream, a drizzle of chocolate sauce and slighted almonds, which are a nice touch! All in all a wonderful meal.

While visiting Pacific Grove I happen to pop in to Peppers Mexicali Cafe for lunch. Upon first entering the cafe on your way to a table you first encounter a small bar on the right. Good for a quick brew, or drink of your choice. Nicely decorated with a Mexican theme, the tables and chairs are comfortable. Service was a little slow at first, however the waitress took our orders. We had chicken enchilada, chicken tamale, with black beans, and rice. The food was good, and light, the black beans were firm, the rice light and fluffy, with chunks of chicken stuffed into the enchiladas, tamales. However there was a lack of sauce to cover everything resulting in the corn meal on the tamale ending up a little on the dry side. I would have preferred a little more sauce myself. Next time I will ask for a side of sauce to make sure everything is covered. Would I eat here again, definitely, and looking forward to my next visit !

The place had a great atmosphere and staff were nice and welcoming- i really wanted to like this place. But the food was not good at all. I don't understand the rave reviews about the food here. We came for dinner and ordered soup of the day (chicken tortilla), vegetarian fajita, and chicken enchilada. The soup was only alright but its hard to be bad at making soup. Fajita had no flavor- very bland, like vegetables steamed in tomatoy soup and just overall no flavor in the fajita. The enchilada was also very bland and the chicken was dry. We couldn't finish our meal. We were disappointed.

I took my friend there last night...her first time...and my millionth time..I eat there a couple times a month minimum...I was a groupie I was very disappointed We got there early, 5pm, it was not busy yet Service was EXCELLENT...food was sub par It came out literally 5 seconds after we ordered ....that is not even time enough to warm it in the microwave.....the quality of the food was just OK...was not like it used to be...not sure what has happened but I am not going back anytime soon

Great food! My husband and I, and another couple were on vacation for the July 4th weekend in Monterey and Pacific Grove. After a long morning and afternoon of riding bikes along the coast and climbing on rocks, we were starving. Peppers was right up the street from the bike rental place and we stopped in for a late lunch. Was it delicious! We started with black bean nachos and they were so tasty! Just the right amount of black beans and jalapenos. I had the guacamole tacos, my husband chicken and beef tacos, and my two friends got a chicken fajita (hers) and a veggie burrito (his). Everything was fantastic! The rice and beans were nicely flavored and the taco shell was something like I've never tasted before! It was like a fluffy pastry shell--amazing! I just wish that as a vegetarian the guac. tacos were filled with something a bit more than literally just guac. (like some tomatoes, or other veggies). It was still delicious though. My husband devoured his food, as did everyone else. Everyone loved the food, the service was good and the decor is very charming. Definitely a must try if you're in the area!

Go, just go. This is the best Mexican food I've tasted outside of Mexico -- absolutely delicious. Our experience was top notch from start to finish. The hostess was warm and friendly, our server Chuy was awesome, and the bussers were fast and friendly too. The restaurant has a fun, funky vibe, and it was packed when we went. We were visiting here on vacation but if I lived there I'd be a regular for sure!

Peppers is the very best Mexican restaurant I have ever experienced. To start the restaurant has great seating - you are not crowded. The chips and salsa starter was perfect. Chips were very fresh. Margaritas are excellent! I ordered a Beef Burrito and my wife Beef Taco/Chicken Enchilada. They came with beans and rice. The beef was not regular ground beef but actual small chunks of shredded beef. The chicken enchilada had chunks of chicken. The beans were either Black Beans or refried beans. But not just mashed up beans but real beans and wonderful. This is taking Mexican food to another level in taste and presentation. For dessert, Flan...Mexican Chocolate Cake....Sopaipillas and Coconut Fudge Macadamia Nut Ice Cream. That ice cream is Lapperts of Hawaii which may be the very, very best ice cream on this planet! Go here and enjoy!!!!

Nice spot - good find for dinner. I got the special - mahi mahi with mango salsa = yummy! Hubby got the fish tacos special swapped from salmon to mahi mahi - he loved it. Kids (9 and 6 yr) were satisfied with their choices but not very excited. The chips pre-meal were tasty and honestly a life saver for the kids. I think we'd go back again but work a little harder to find something for the kids they were more excited about.

The place has an amazing vibe and the decor is interesting. They take the "pepper" in the name pretty seriously! The food is good but not the best Mexican food that I have had. The salsa is superb though and totally worth the visit. I could definitely eat here again!

I honestly don't understand people about there reviews. This is one of the BEST Mexican style food out there. No it's not the same old authentic Mexican food. There blend of fresh produce and combined with great meat makes for an insanity great meal. I had the tacos al carbon. Meat cooked perfect, tender and flavor was out of this world. Perfect everything. Huge plates. Be ready to eat. Service is always awesome and fast. Jessica I have had the last two times. I asked her about two dishes and she gave me great advise. Smiling and fun all the time. But might have to wait since it is small place. Great margaritas. Blood orange margarita is always great. I come from the Bay Area. (2hours away) and every time I'm in the area I have stop eat here. Serious worth it. Don't listen to other peoples reviews. Either there from a competitors place or only think authentic Mexican food is the only way. On the menu it says it best. Mexicali food. Enjoy it you'll be back again.

The margaritas are fabulous the food is really awful. They offer 2 types of salsa but they are both s**** then you think 'I'll order the salsa fresca' $2.50 and that is s*** also ??? Combine the 3 salsas and make just ONE good one you friggin idiots!!!! The bartender/ waitress was so rude, I asked for my food after 50 minutes and she said ' you've got enough here with your little salsas and chips' my goodness I was starving!! I've never ever been treated that way ..... She had absolutely NO finesse and had no clue or had never been trained in service. Good atmosphere but ......they need a new chef may be a Mexican chef ??? Better food from The Roach Coach!!!!

I would give this restaurant 0 stars if I could. Went here with a large family group and they said they could accommodate us-we had a reservation. After waiting 20 additional minutes after being seated for 2 more chairs to accommodate our large group, we finally got them by corralling them from an empty table, despite asking for them twice. The hostess or owner or manager went ballistic! Screaming at the top of her lungs, took the chairs away, and then kicked us out-yes all 20 of us Including our elderly relatives and 2 kids! Our child was scared she was going to get arrested. Honestly, her reaction was way over the top to us taking 2 chairs from another table. We also left the baby's shoe and she came out and threw it into the street, another patron saw it and came over to hand it to us. Then called the police. We REPEATEDLY asked what we did and she wouldn't answer-just told us to get out. Can't even comprehend the level of craziness she exhibited.

We visit at least once a year, and we're always happy to eat here. The normal sauce on the table is good but spirited, if you ask, they can provide a milder version. Everything we've ordered has been really good. It's easy to look at what goes to other people's tables and think, "Mmmm , next time I'll have that!

  • Christina J.

As if the fact that they were really busy wasn't enough to endorse their already great reviews. Everything was wonderful from the chips and salsa to the margaritas to the entrees. We had carne asada, calamari, swordfish fajitas and salmon tacos and every bite was fabulous. Cannot recommend them highly enough.

3 words- Blood Orange Margarita. I would give it 5 stars if their fajitas came out on a sizzling platter, but sadly it's a disappointment. The chips and salsa are addicting though. Delish!!!! Also, the servers are the best ;)

This is a fun spot in PG that seems to be very busy. Luckily we didn't have to wait long for our party of 2. Service was friendly and attentive. Chips and salsa were good. Shared a cheese stuffed pasilla, and had the artichoke and shroom enchiladas while my date had the santa fe enchiladas. Huge plates, with sour cream and guac, black beans and rice, and good portions! You really get what you pay for here. Would definitely return.

I have given Peppers another chance today -- no mas. I ordered the fish tacos -- advertised on the specials board as "pacific swordfish." Silly me for assuming a restaurant just down the road from the Monterey Aquarium whose famed Seafood Watch is the standard for sustainable seafood guidance *and* whose menu specializes in seafood would know the source of their seafood! I didn't ask how it was caught (legitimate question but I didn't want to come off as full-blown Portlandia) - just if it was imported (not even "local caught"). The server was confused, then flustered, then annoyed. Really? Because, last time I checked, the U.S. doesn't have a monopoly on pacific swordfish. (And, speaking as a former server, you should probably keep a cheat sheet with this info in your book in your apron if you don't have it memorized.) Anyhow, token nice comment: the plating was pretty! The fish was OK, served on single flour tortillas (huh?) along with a small side of the kind of guacamole that you can buy at the grocery store that has no flavor, is super smooth, and never ever turns brown (freaky), surprisingly bland yet fresh pico de Gallo, a heaping pile of shredded cheese and lettuce, plain black beans (seemingly from a can), raw onions, dollop of sour cream, and some bland overcooked rice. It was underwhelming. Thank goodness for the spicy salsa (which was mostly just chiles and tomato - no real depth - garlic, onions, cilantro, anything?). The blood orange margarita was strong (not particularly well balanced) so there was that. And for the reviewer who has this to say: If you're a dingbat who thinks you know what real Mexican food is (in the real world Mexico is huge and has various cultures/foods from the mountains to the coast to the forests/deserts, ect...) then maybe you should stick to Taco Bell. Taco Bell is actually preferable to this place. Also, apparently I haven't traveled to the part of Mexico where the cuisine features bland food with heaps of cheese and sour cream. They must keep that place a secret. Don't worry, fans of Peppers -- I won't take up a table at your beloved spot again. You can have it all to yourselves. Two stars is overly generous.

Amazing meal...Ihad the prawn fajitas and my husband the creamy garlic prawns..both dishes were amazing..would recommend both of them. Friendly staff, great service wish I lived in town so I could go all the time.

Chose this place over the other Mexican in town as this looked a little more sit-down-ish for a dinner out with cocktails, etc. The menu was nicely varied compared to most typical Mexican restaurants and I would come back to try some of the seafood specialties again. Salsas and drinks were yummy. Kids were happy. Overall we were satisfied with the chicken, cheese enchiladas, and I liked my mahi mahi tacos except they were a bit plain in taste, fish was fresh though. This wouldn't be a 4 star in the bay area but I think it is around here...

I've eaten at Peppers several times and am consistently impressed with the service and the food. I've tried a variety of menu items - from just chicken tortilla soup to their Snapper Veracruz, which was tasty. Most entrees come with black beans but it's no problem to substitute refried beans instead. And they have delicious tamales which are sometimes available as a daily special. Their Ultimate Margaritas are too strong (not even palatable) but their regular house margaritas are perfect. They're the best margaritas I've found in Monterey County. Being originally from Texas, I miss my queso dip and my chili con carne. But Peppers Mexicali is the next best thing to Tex-Mex.

Had a great time and dinner at Peppers. The staff was attentive, the food was delicious, the margaritas were yummy! Can't wait to go back next time we visit pacific grove. The restaurant was packed on a Friday night, with many smiles around the room. As a party of 6, we really enjoyed our experience here!

This is our new favorite place! We went here the first time based on yelp reviews. Since then we have been here a number of times and Peppers never disappoints. We have never had a bad dish here. The ultimate margarita is the best and the blood orange margarita goes down very easy. We will continue to return.

I have been to Peppers maybe 5 or 6 times over the past year - sometimes it's busy and sometimes not. Service is always pretty good regardless of how busy and the tables are always clean. For the first time I had the salmon fish tacos special and for the first time I was disappointed. The portion was small - just 2 very small pieces of fish, each on a flour tortilla. I guess what you put on a flour tortilla is officially a taco if the tortilla is not folded over. The meal included a tiny bowl of lettuce with cheese, another tiny bowl of diced tomatoes, and a third tiny bowl of guacamole. Rice and black beans were included as sides on the plate with the tacos. And all that for $20, which I thought was too pricey for what they served. Other than that, the other meals I've had a Peppers have been between very good to excellent and portion size has been just right. I'll be back again.

DO NOT go here if you are looking for 'authentic 'Mexican food. While the food was not horrible, it just doesn't taste very fresh. It has the style of a Mexican restaurant in the Northern states. That being said, the service was not bad and the atmosphere was okay.

  • Ann E.

Peppers is easily my favorite restaurant ever! I have been going there for over 15 years, and they never fail to amaze me with the stellar service and quality of food. The entire staff is friendly and accommodating. Heather was my waitress on my most recent visit (and she has helped me many times before), and she was on point with everything! I cannot say enough how much I love this place!!! Way to be awesome Peppers!!! Keep up the phenomenal work!!!

  • Jane R.

I still crave the corn chowder, enchiladas, and sopapillas. They only make the corn chowder soup sometimes, but it's always worth asking if it's on the menu. Be prepared to wait for a table if you come here at night. It's one of the most popular restaurant (tourists and locals), but trust me, the wait is well worth it. The green salsa they serve with chips is addicting, so beware. The enchiladas are by far the best item on the menu - savory, spicy, and fresh! Save room for dessert, the sopapillas are warm, soft, and buttery! The service here is consistently good. All of the staff treats you like family. Whether it's for a date, family dinner, or celebration - Peppers is appropriate for all outings.

If you want a very good, fun experience in a casual but nice environment, this is a great place. The seafood specials I tried have been very fresh so keep an eye out for those. The salmon tacos were excellent. Good veggy options too. It's anglicized Mexican food as others have noted so just have the right expectations. I visit every time I do the Sea Otter Classic and it's always been really good. I would do 4.5 stars if I could! Extra points for a well stocked bar and cold Bohemia.

Yes it was! What stood out was an Artichoke-Mushroom Enchilada. Prior to that loaded up on Good Tortilla chips but Enchilada was bland...Maybe I should have gotten a traditional dinner. No Draft beer just bottle and my Mai tia was week...No need to come back since there are many Mexican restaurants in the area.

This place was amazing. Got a recommendation from a friend who lives in the area and he pointed me here. It's not a big place, but we came in with 8 people and they seated us fine. I would recommend making a reservation if you plan on bringing a group. It got pretty packed soon after we got there. Margaritas were delicious. We ended up with 3 pitchers! The fajitas were perfect. Half of us got some form of the fajitas. We were able to try all the different types and none of them disappointed. The beef fajitas were particularly good. I will definitely pay this place a visit next time I'm in the area.

One of my favorite ethnic restaurants in Pacific Grove. Hubby and I enjoy 2 maragarita each and we share the beef fajitas. Big portions, fantastic flavors and wonderful onion flavor. The rice is so fluffy and the black beans make me want more! Usually crowded and priced well for the freshness. We go once and week and often times will eat in the bar facing looking out the windows. Yummy Yummy !

Best Mexican food joint in PG. Decent margaritas and really good service. They make their chips and salsa in house and it's served generously before your order arrives.

I had the pleasure of taking my wonderful girlfriend to this quaint restaurant set in a neighborhood in Pacific grove. As soon as we walked in the place their aroma took me over with the scent of down home loving in the kitchen. And it was. But first off let me tell you about the atmosphere in this place. It was like an entire family getting together for a meal. Loud and friendly. It was a Friday night. And you could tell it was one of those places the locals enjoy, and the lucky foodie finds on a tour. Everyone had a smile and were loosely having their good times. Everything from the warm chips and fresh salsa to the enchilada to the tacos El carbon, and even the well soda! were all super fresh and amazing in preparedness and flavor! Oh my god the the steak in my tacos was so good I didn't want to make the taco. but when I did...mmmmm-mmm. Haha no really, it was good. The calamari appetizer was so fresh and perfectly cooked. Ooooo then It had a side that was so creamy and spicy and in my opinion would be awesome on a fish ssandwich. Or coleslaw. Mmmm I could go on and on about how this place amazed me. Wow The service was top notch, nice, and very organized. The place was impeccably clean. We were served quickly and great in portions size. It had all the makings of a well loved establishment of their customers and their staff. We will brag to our friends and will always come back when we're in the hood. I highly recommend to all those who like a good mexicali to give this place your attention. Because they deserve it!

Good, relaxed atmosphere, great service, and high quality food is what I experienced on my first visit to Pepper's. Throw in the unique and delicious Blood-orange Margarita and I was a very happy person! Def will go back when I'm in this area!

I decided to try this place based on a friends recommendation and the Yelp reviews looked awesome. I was not disappointed! We came in for lunch and I had the seafood tacos, they vary by day and that day it was sword fish. I received one good size piece in each flour tortilla and fresh guacamole, salsa, lettuce and cheese were all on the side so I could build my own tacos. I love that cause I can be picky. My girlfriend had a combination plate one cheese enchilada one chile relleno which were both excellent. "Just like grandma's" Even though we were there for lunch I also had to try the blood orange margarita, it's 5 o'clock somewhere, and I'm glad I did. It was very refreshing and good. It was a busy lunch rush, but it didn't take long for us to get our drinks and food, so we will be coming back.

Very tasty. My wife had Prawns Gonzalez and I had the Snapper Yucatan. We both thoroughly enjoyed our dishes. The only thing is that both indicated they were spicy and we both agree that while the flavors were great, that "spicy" description clearly missed the mark. Service was prompt, courteous and very efficient. Prices can't be beat for the area....in fact, the prices would have been good nearly anywhere. They have some great mixed drinks (as well as a full bar so order as you please). Very much enjoyed the Blood Orange Margarita.

This is a fantastic Mexican restaurant in Pacific Grove. A friend and I went in for dinner, we hadn't called ahead, but were seated right away. They bring both a verde and a Tojo salsa to the table for the chips, which I can only assume is house prepared. I ordered a margarita, which is NOT prepared with pre-mix, but made with fresh lines, blue agave, and tequila (in other words, an actual margarita). They give you four choices of tequila, none of which are a "cheap" tequila. I opted for the 3rd tier Caxadores. A word to those who like pretend pre-mix margaritas, a real margarita is a little more bitter, and tastes more like a cocktail than what you may be used to. For dinner I had a "burrito platter" that consisted of a salad sans dressing, Spanish rice, black beans, and a wet burrito in red sauce with my choice of either beef, chicken, or chile verde, i opted for half beef and half chicken, which was met by a brief moment of hesitation on the part of the waiter, but was not a problem. Between the margarita the dinner, and a tip, my check was $30 Updated from 4 to 5 stars after my second visit. The smoked Gouda quesadilla is one of the most amazing things I've ever tasted.

Loved this restaurant! Yummy food and I'm really picky when it comes to enchiladas, their's was the best. Great service and and comfortable atmosphere. Can't wait for our next trip to Carmel so we can eat here again!!

Wow! We showed up and immediately had a table. Chips and salsa arrived quick and we had our drinks within 2 minutes. Before we could even drink half our drinks dinner was on the table. The place was totally packed and service was fast and food was amazing!

HolyCow! This place is amazing!! Chili Verde Con Carnitas Tamales are to die for!! We also ordered the mushroom artichoke enchiladas and chicken moles enchiladas were amazing! I love their rice and I'm super picky with Mexican rice. The house salad with the house dressing was great! Local root beer in bottles are yummy too. Great margaritas as well.

Well, this post is base on this visit, we sat at the bar and got drinks and an appetizer, my advise is that if you know what real Mexican food is, this is not the place for you to eat We order chicken nachos = boil chicken with a tomato sauce, totally: insipid, tasteless, dull, unsavory etc. you get the picture, the rest of the ingredients just as bad:( as far as the drinks go stick with the beer, heads up they don't serve beer on tap

Best Mexican Restaurant in Monterey! The artichoke enchiladas are to die for! This is a must go!

  • A W.

Wow! Some of the worst mexican food I have ever had. Ordered a combo plate with beef taco and a spicy pork enchilada. First off the beef tasted horrendous, who the hell puts cinnamon in their shredded beef. At least it tasted like cinnamon, gross. Spicy pork I don't think so, nothing remotely hot, or good about this item. The best part is the habanero sauce they have at the table and pitch on the menu. This was the most bland, tasteless, and spiceless hot sauce I have ever had. Did I mention also that this place is completely overpriced! Extremely disappointing, every restaurant I've been to lately in Monterey is complete garbage.

  • Jason K.

the usual mexican place... i can't say bad thing except that this is the american version of the mexican place... the place is small and busy which is good that means that the food is fresh and its a place that taste reply good. when i was got my good it was pretty good portion, the food was very good, i would come back here to try other food items...

I've been here a handful of times and for the most part, it's always good. Only one time the food and service were lacking. The dining room is very loud when it's busy. This last time I sat in the bar and it wasn't nearly as noisy. The chicken molé enchiladas are wonderful. Good drinks. Good size portions for the price.

On a recent trip to Pacific Grove, Peppers was recommended by the front desk at a nearby B and B. The wait was short, and the drinks were good, but the food, at least what my wife and I ordered was bland. They tout themselves as being Mexican Fusion...fused with what is the mystery here. I had the Mexican curry prawns and my wife had the Chicken enchiladas mole. You know you've made a mistake when the flavor dies out after the first bite. Thin uninspired sauces and flavors that had no depth or longevity, as though boiled chicken or prawns were tossed into a sauce based soup. Good food should be like a good bottle of wine, it should start with good flavor and have a good finish, which neither of these dishes had...the rice and beans were also very bland and tasteless..seriously, how do you manage that...???? Not coming back..too many good choices in PG to give this a second chance.

    (2)
  • Scott M.

I've been going to Pepper's on and off since the early 1990's it had always been my go-to place for more authentic Mexican food in PG. Back then you would get a separate page with the menu full of creative and delicious specials - many of them with fresh local seafood. You could taste the different spices that differentiated it from a lot of Mexican places. Even after they were sold they managed to keep the magic going for a very long time. But now - sadly that magic is gone and the restaurant appears to be sliding into the stereotype American Mexican restaurant that you can find almost anywhere. The food is not bad - just no longer special. There are still lots of customers and a wait on many nights - so for many people they must find something here worth the wait and money - wish I could. I miss the old Peppers - but this place had a longer run than many great restaurants. Given all the people who still go, I'm sure it will be around for some time.

Super clean place with wonderful staff! Everyone was so courteous and friendly... We felt totally welcome. Portions are large, so you may want to split a dish. The chile verde is nicely spicy... And the plate is seriously filled with generous portions of meat, black beans and rice.

    (4)
  • Jon C.

Service was good. The salsa that comes with the chips in this place is pretty spicy, they have a non-spicy version but you may have to ask for it. The food wasn't bad. I've just had so much better. If you don't have access to really good, authentic (Mexico), Mexican food, the place probably isn't bad. This place is pretty Americanized, which might be why they call it Mexicali??? Anyways, DO NOT order the calamari, you would think this can't go wrong, but it can. Had a combo plate with a beef and chicken enchilada. Comes with rice and cheese topped beans. Really hot plate. Had it topped with the red and green sauce. Not spicy. I was starving so I ate it all. Also on the table were the chicken skewers. This was tastier than it looked. Wouldn't come back but it was really crowded with many people who appeared to have been there before.

  • Tanner C.

Good service, average food. Drink selection was good and chips & salsa were tasty. Steer clear of the tortilla soup, it's far from authentic and is very bland. Basically just chicken stock with veggies and cubes of overcooked chicken and tortilla strips. Tacos al carbon was okay, the natural flavor of the skirt steak holds it together as the rest of the ingredients were lackluster. Maybe seafood dishes are a better option.

    (2)
  • Sunny J.

I ordered the skirt steak tacos and the meat was just super delicious. But everythibg else was kinda bland even the guacamole. I wish the dinning area was bigger cus it felt crowded. And our food didnt get out as fast as some others.

The service is terrific. The food is average. Don't order the seafood tacos. The fajitas are ok. Not my favorite place. THE FOOD IS VERY AVERAGE, MAYBE BEOW If you are a Mexican food lower this is not for you!!!!! Sub par you

  • Gerry K.

The soups here are outstanding, either the corn chowder or tortilla. But equally good and filling are the tacos, either fresh fish, salmon in our case, or beef. So large you can easily share a meal, with bottomless chips and salsa. The bar area is also great for happy hour and appetizers. Easy walk from many nearby B&B's.

My husband and I visited Peppers on 3/16/2015. We were given the suggestion for this place by the innkeeper at Centrella Inn which was walking distance from Peppers. We were greeted and seated immediately, given chips and salsa verde & roja. My husband ordered a flight of tequila and I had a martini. Both reasonably priced and and the tequila flight was fun. We had been driving all day and we were not that hungry so we decided to share a combo. We chose 3 things: enchilada, chili rellanos and a tostado. Thank goodness we only ordered that, the portions were abundant, which wasn't as impressive as the quality. I would look up at my husband as I was eating a tostado, yes, just a tostado, and say " this is the best Mexicali food I have ever had". It really was, he agreed. Another observation that really impressed me, while we were dining a busboy was bussing the table next to us. After he cleaned and set the table he took a step back and looked at his table, adjusted a fork and moved on. It just showed the attention to detail from every team member at Peppers. We recommend Peppers, go and be delighted.

Went there for lunch after walking by seeing it packed the night before. Have a gluten problem so need corn only no flour options. Ordered the special fish tacos. Told the waitress to make sure they were corn and not flour with the gluten issue. When they came out they were on obviously on flour. When asked she was in partial denial they were flour. Hard to believe she couldn't tell the difference working in a Mexican restaurant. Took them back to the kitchen only to come back out 5 mins later with corn, but told us it was the same filling just transferred into the new shell. No food allergy training since this is cross contamination. The chili rellenos ordered were cold in the middle and the one flour taco ordered was deep fried and over cooked the shell. Only one of us has a gluten problem. It fell apart to a dozen pieces when picked up into a taco salad. Very average Mexican food. Not sure what everyone lines up for. Perhaps we just had an off day experience. Won't be back.

This place was delicious. We ordered the chicken nachos and weren't disappointed. It was enough to feed us both. They easily accommodated me by leaving onions off. The service was great and Jamie was a great server-very helpful and sweet. Extremely affordable.

This is not a traditional Mexican restaurant. If you think "Chevy's" your close. While the place is packed, it does not have Mexican patrons in here nor are the servers Mexican. Ordered the Huevos Rancheros ( see pic $10.95) and since the menu did not state how the eggs would be cooked, I had to ask because this is not a traditional Mexican restaurant. The server did state that the eggs are over easy....so far so good. When the plate was presented (see pic) is was beautiful but as pointed out by the server "be carful, the plates are very hot" and this was one of the problems. The plate was so hot that it kept cooking the over easy eggs to the point of being over hard by the time I cut into them. I also could have used more Ranchero sauce. The rice that was served with them was americanized and not a traditional tasting or looking Mexican rice. The Black beans were good Also ordered was the Artichoke and Mushroom Enchilada and the sauce was too vinegary tasting. (see pic $9.95)

The chips and salsa were a great start. The green salsa was unusual but very good. Too bad it was downhill from there. The enchiladas were watery which seems to say frozen. The quality was comparable to any Mexican chain. Not great.

This place was amazing!!!! Good margaritas, and the food was so good! We had to wait awhile for a table, but it was Saturday night, totally fine. The service was good, food was out fast and hot. Every one is our group was completely satisfied. My husband got steak fajitas, the meat was incredible, so tender. We will absolutely be making this our new spot!!

Awesome food, great service and comfy atmosphere. We have only had issues a couple of times with the hostess, telling us 10mins when it should have been 30mins. But that has happened maybe twice in the 8 years I have been going here hence the 5 stars. Love it! Try it! Eat local!!

A great place to get Mexicali food. Don't come here expecting Mexican food, it says it all in the name. The food is good, service is always nice. Like I said, don't come expecting traditional mexican, but expect great food nonetheless.

  • Hadleigh W.

Amazing!!! The service was good and the food was even better!! My husband and our friend came in as the restaurant was recommended by numerous locals and they were right. The restaurant was a little small and packed wall to wall with furniture but that didn't affect the taste however it is part of the reason for the 4 stars instead of 5. The other half of that is because this is tex mex style Mexican not "authentic". All in all if you like Mexican this is for sure the place for you!

Really good Mexican food, and the drinks are so strong you may have trouble writing a review soon after your meal. I had the enchiladas and they were very good. My friend had the chicken nachos, and those were absolutely stellar. The ultimate margarita knocked me on my butt, but was still delicious. If you are craving Mexican in Monterey, this is the place to go!

Ok, so I google "vegan restaurants" in the Monterey area and this one comes up....I was born in Mexicali so I thought I'd give it a try. I was with my three year old as she loves beans/rice like I do. My determination of weather or not a Mexican place is good or not is based on their salsa. It is made with canned tomato sauce! That was the first thing I didnt like. (plus, I got confirmation when I saw a cook walk through the dining room with a huge can of it) I asked the waiter if chicken stock was used for the rice and he said, no. We use rice oil? Maybe I didnt understand. Then he said, It's vegetarian....don't worry. I ordered a bean tostada....it was ok. I am used to finely shredded iceburg but they used green leaf....It was just the furthest thing from authentic Mexican food! Kind of like taco bell except I actually love their tostadas. Sorry, but we will never go there again.

Oh my... The Cheese Enchiladas in red sauce are fabulous as in FABU! I am so in love with these Cheese Enchiladas, I cannot wait to go back for more. Smoky, a bit of heat and tang in the red sauce-perfection.

After reading countless reviews on Peppers the one thing that intrigued me the most was the blood orange margarita. Regardless of the time, I knew without a doubt I was going to order it. As soon as we were seated I ordered my blood orange margarita even though it was only 12:30. Best decision ever!!! Their was a great balance of sweetness without overpowering the tequila. Simply delicious! Before we even ordered, our waitress brought us the usual chips and salsa. However, this was by no means your typical "salsa". First off, there were 2 salsas, one green and one red. Second, neither one was chunky, instead they had a smooth liquid texture with just the right amount of thickness to cling onto the chip. Both dips were sensational, but if I had to pick one, the green one wins by a small margin. For lunch my friend and I both ordered the two item combination. I decided to try the chicken tamale and beef burrito while he picked the chile rellenos and beef enchilada. Chicken Tamale: freshly made, chicken was moist and tender with great flavor Beef Burrito: tender chunks of savory meat on top of more meat!!! A burrito any carnivore would love Chile Rellanos: probably the best I have had so far in Monterey. The blend of cheese and spices paired brilliantly with the charred exterior of the chile. Beef Enchilada (red sauce): thought it was good but nothing extraordinary Overall Thoughts Perceived as being Mex-cali food and not traditional Mexican food, I still believe that Peppers stays true to their cultural roots

First time back in about 5 years and it seems that the food and service are still great! Our waiter Josh was amazing, very attentive and had good knowledge of the menu. I tried their tacos al carbon, which was marinated flank steak and it was sooooo tender, even my one year old loved it! Blood orange margarita was yummy as well. Will definitely be back next time we are in town.

I used to love this place and go often, but I will never return since my last experience. The hostess has to be the most rude and arrogant person I have come across in a restaurant in my life. And that's saying a lot since I lived in LA. We called ahead one evening and she said they couldn't take us until over and hours wait. So I said we are still a little outside town so put us down and we will be there in 30 minutes in case things change. She hatefully said they wouldn't, whatever. So we get there I tell her we are there and she snaps I told you already it would be and hour. I told her that I know, I'm just informing her we arrived. We take a seat and wait and wait despite the fact that there are a couple open two tops. About 45 minutes into our wait, A woman walks in with her husband and two badly behaved children and is told the same thing, one hour wait. The lady looks around and sees the two open tables and says can you seat us now if we split up two and two? And to my shock the hottest seats them right away!! Allowing the two yelling running children to sit at a two top alone with their parents nearby! I was shocked and asked the older couple next to me how long they have been waiting and they said over an hour! I confronted the hostess and said why would you seat them and not the people waiting, she said she didn't need to explain to me and that she already told me it would be an hour and she would seat when a table opened up. I left. Let's not even get into the profit margins of an adult, ie alcohol vs two kids meals! Needless to say she is the reason I will never ever return. Their food isn't good enough to warrant being treated so horribly!

I went here with the husband and friends and we all loved everything. We shared a cheese grilled pepper appetizer and it was so good I could've eaten a million of them. A friend and I shared the Mission Burrito platter and it was huge and delicious. My husband had the Southwest Sausage and it was sweet and spicy and marvelous. We all left very satisfied and happy and I wish I lived closer to try everything!

Peppers is a solid 3-star experience. I grew up on the Mexico/Arizona border, and I know my Mexican food well. Peppers provides a good imitation for being so far from the border. The beans and rice are good, but they are a little too Americanized for me (and yes I know it's mexiCALI, but the beans/rice just aren't that good). More spice would do them well; Spanish fried rice is not a hard thing to get right. I've had several different main dishes, but haven't been blown away by any of them. The burritos are so-so; I'd much rather get the mole chicken enchiladas! Try the gouda quesadilla to taste what they do right: Mexi/Cali fusion. Their bar is well-stocked and the bartender mixes delicious drinks. They have my favorite tequila, Herradura, so that's a major bonus. My friends and I do not mind waiting for a table - heads up, tiny dining area - while sipping a great margarita at the bar. Head to Peppers because they have food that no one else offers. Just have realistic expectations of what "Mexican" means this far up the coast.

I came here very excited to try this place. Tried the blood orange margarita (not worth your $8). True the enchilada with rice and beans. The beans were old, the rice was raw and the enchilada was EDIBLE. Simply awful.

I'm a local and this place is my favorite to go, hands down, anywhere. A few notes: It is a bit expensive, so if you're looking for a good budget place, this is not for you. It is always busy, so call ahead for a reservation or sit up by the bar. If not, you may have to wait 30 minutes or so. It's a little noisy, but I find the atmosphere genuine and very local. Very family friendly and first date friendly. Must get dishes: Nachos Blood Orange Margaritas Quesadillas Tacos

We walked in to this restaurant because it was close to the Museum of Natural History and we were too lazy to get back into the car. It smelled amazing from the street. The restaurant is nicely decorated with a "pepper" theme. I thought it was very cute. Service was excellent and the staff was very nice. I ordred the seafood tacos. I figured that they couldn't do seafood wrong since we were in Monterey and the area is known for seafood. I was not impressed. My first few bites tasted good. I was hungry. As my hunger subsided my taste buds were less impressed. My fish was fishy and dry. After while it was not so yummy any more. I'm not so sure I'll visit again.

Very good, cheesy Mexican lunch. Thank you, Pacific Grove Inn for referring us here. We had a delicious lunch on our way to Lover's Point Beach. My hubby and I both had combos. I got a Chile Relleno with an enchilada and he got a taco with an enchilada. Both were good except the chicken taco. The chicken has a lot of sauce which made the tortilla soggy. So, if you order that, eat the taco first!

  • A B.

We went on a Sunday when most Pacific Grove restaurants are closed. There was a long wait and it was too hot inside to enjoy a meal, much less the heating effect of the tequila! Not overwhelmed with the fare. Maybe we will try again when it's a cooler day.

Fresh, light, and simple entrees like I might make myself at home. Nothing impressive, but there is a place for this kind of food. The staples--salsa, beans, chips and rice--were excellent. The atmosphere was light and bright. The kids menu was perfect for our boys' needs.

Peppers is my go-to spot. Their ingredients are always very fresh and delicious and they offer a variety of locally inspired dishes, such as my ultimate favorite smoked Gouda quesadilla, filled with fresh veggies and loads of local artichokes! Hubs and I are both vegetarian, and the menu offers lots of choices for us. Oh, and don't forget to order the sopapillas for dessert... you won't be sorry. This is not a traditional Mexican restaurant, it is mexi-cali, and so combines Mexican-inspired food along with local fare the peninsula has to offer (fresh produce, seafood, etc.). Peppers is in Pacific Grove, which is a low-key, calm neighborhood, but this place always manages to be lively and warm, with very attentive and accommodating staff. I would definitely recommend coming here if you're looking for super fresh food, a good atmosphere and an awesome blood orange margarita.

This place is very good. All dishes were fresh, service was great and the evening was a success. The Carne Asada isn't what you would normally expect, but was quite good nonetheless. The salmon tacos, which I didn't order but tried were the BOMB!

Visiting Monterey from the Bay Area and already getting tired of the overpriced tourist traps around the wharf and cannery row until yelp help us found this gem. Doesn't look much from the outside but it has a festive interior and the staff is very welcoming. We didn't have to wait and were seated promptly with chips and salsa in front of us. The green one is delicious. The drink order arrived promptly and the previous yelp reviews were right! The margarita packed a serious punch. The food arrived hot, fresh and fast. Delicious beef tamales and chile relenos, mission style burritos and enchiladas. Plenty of vegetarian options. Delicious and affordable! Best dinner of our trip!

Awesome food...I've been coming here for years and there is a reason it stays busy...it never disappoints. Call ahead if you can as the bar is small and gets crowded quickly. The food is fresh and light, the drinks are good and I've always received great service. The calimari app is one that I never miss, and parking is usually easy in the attached lot. In the nearly 20 years that I have been coming to this place, I honestly can't remember a bad meal or a bad experience...now thats a hell of a record!!

I guess I need to try this place again, because people seem to love it, but I definitely didn't have a great experience here. I got a combo plate and my husband got carne asada. My food just tasted off, the shredded beef in my taco tasted bitter. I left 90% of my meal, just couldn't eat it (and I love to eat!). My husband ate his carne asada because he was really hungry, but said that it was chewy and didn't have much flavor. When the waitress came to bring our check at the end of the meal, she didn't ask if there was a problem with my obviously uneaten food. My husband felt bad that I didn't get a decent dinner, so very out of character for both of us, he nicely brought it up. "You know, she really didn't enjoy her meal...." After explaining, he added that he also didn't feel his carne asada wasn't well prepared, either. The waitress snapped, "Well, you ate it!" I was shocked! Yes, he did it eat because he was really hungry, and she hadn't checked on us once before bringing our check. I'd honestly never been spoken to by a waitress in this way. She didn't apologize at all, but did take my meal off of our bill. We were really, REALLY tempted not to tip, but we both believe that you should always tip well, so my husband left a 15% tip, the lowest I've ever seen him leave. We will probably try it again, I completely understand that sometimes the chef has a bad night, or a waitress has an off day. We'll see!

What a great place. I live in the bay area but have been here 3 times. It's a must when we visit Monterey. Great food and service. Tons of options for vegetarians. Everything taste so fresh and they were great with the 4 kids we had 6 and under!

Peppers has been a family favorite forever! Love the chips and salsa, fish tacos, chile verde, and blood orange margaritas! Fun, welcoming atmosphere, great service and fresh ingredients! Always a fabulous dining experience!

MEDIOCRE YEAR AFTER YEAR (VERY HIGH PRICES, NO SERVICE) "Wait, did I eat dinner yet? Oh yea, we went to peppers, there goes my coffee money!" $15.10 2 burittos (1 chicken & 1 beef) with beans and rice to go + tip to the hostes who says 2 words (4.90, because im nice) a nice person stays broke, and hungry, in good old days PG *The burritos used to be slightly bigger and a lot cheaper...it is now laughable, like the Titanic before it went down, it is just a matter of time here. They were always bland, so at least they are consistent on that. This was an emergency, needed to eat, no other places open, wont do it again. BOTTOM LINE, CAME HERE 3 TIMES IN 5 YEARS, NEVER AGAIN, NOT WORTH THE TRIP (not mad, just big letters so you can see them clearly, not worth it! seriously)...I would give 1 star if the girl wasn't just bland and mute but was rude, she was not (at least)...kind of like the food...eh, pin prick...hey that hurt =) *It may have tasted a small degree better if they didn't whip together in litterally 5 minutes, showing, well....no effort...... mediocrity, of the lowest degree ALSO NOT ONE CHANGE IN 25 YEARS OF COMING HERE ON AND OFF,MOSTLY OFF...THIS APPROACH WORKS, IF THE PRODUCT IS A GOOD ONE, THIS ONE IS EXACTLY THE SAME...MUST BE ALL FRIENDS, LOCAL WINE/ALCOHOLICS AND DYSPEPTICS .....THE VOTERS WITH RAVES??? "WHA WHA.....WHAT?"

Down the street from our little bed and breakfast, we walked toward the water...only to find this wonderful, little cafe. My Blood Orange Margarita was DELICIOUS, as confessed by other yelpers. I'm also craving more of their Corn Chowder (but it was such a cold day that it was a bowl of heaven). I would go back JUST for the cocktail, but we so loved their food too. The service was EXTREMELY SLOW, but the place was packed.

My boyfriend and I decided to walk to Peppers for a spontaneous Saturday dinner because we had not tried this place yet. We looked at the menu beforehand and thought it was pretty expensive for a Mexican food place but thought that it must be really good if they charge so much. We had a short wait to get a table and I inquired about the seafood tacos. The special was mahi mahi with mango salsa and I decided to opt out and get the prawn tacos instead. That in and of itself was misleading; the prawns were medium size shrimp which had been butterflied to look larger. There were only 3 per taco. After paying $20 for shrimp tacos, I thought I'd get more for my money. To top it off, they made me pay $3 for the mango salsa that really should come with it (and the mangos were crunchy and tasteless). The rice, beans and taco were bland. The service was attentive but not worth the overpriced food. I don't think we'll be going back.

I have gone to Pepper's for years- and I've never had a bad meal! I love the food, it is more TEX-MEX as it was first described when it opened in I believe 1989- but the food is really, really excellent!!!!! A bit loud so wear your hearing aid during busy hours! but I would take anyone there proudly. Paula Scott

If you're a dingbat who thinks you know what real Mexican food is (in the real world Mexico is huge and has various cultures/foods from the mountains to the coast to the forests/deserts, ect...) then maybe you should stick to Taco Bell... However if you want Mexican from a local restaurant that uses fresh ingredients then this is the place for you. The fact this is one of the few Mexican places in town you should call ahead for reservations should tell you something.

The servers will give you their honest opinion on the dishes, so ask them! They won't try and sell you on everything. We stayed at the Centrella Inn which is just a block over and walked here on Satuday evening. It looked very crowded when we arrived, but we were seated quickly. The food was very good and my husband and I both enjoyed the Blood Orange margarita!

Yep, it's a "go to" place for sure. We've been there many times and both the service and food have been excellent every time. There is a full bar, and a specials menu that I highly recommend to order from. All of the dishes I've had have had a special flair to them that is at least a notch above most other restaurants. There is often (usually) a short wait, but the experience is worth it.

Peppers fanatics: You've anointed as perfect a very average restaurant. When we got into town and asked around where a good restaurant would be, Peppers always seemed to be the first thing out of peoples mouths. Arriving at the restaurant at 6:45 on a Wednesday evening, we found a long line and a half-hour wait. OK, we thought, if it's as great as everyone says, it will be well worth the wait. It's not. Now, let's give credit where due. Their house margarita is about as good as any I've ever had. Smooth, flavorful, and well balanced. Menu is interesting, if a little over ambitious. I ordered one of the day's specials, the snapper Yucatan. Description spoke of citrus and spicy flavors. What arrived was an overcooked filet of snapper (rendering it tough and flavorless) literally buried under a pile of overcooked chopped sweet pepper, onion and garlic. This is appealing from neither a presentation nor taste perspective. They could save on raw ingredients while offering better presentation and flavor by cutting way back on this concoction. My wife ordered a chile relleno and a chicken mole enchilada. The way she picked at her chile relleno, I could tell she wasn't enjoying it, and she confirmed that for me. As far as the mole sauce, she said it was nowhere near as good as what she's had at the small, local mexican restaurants near home. Service was friendly, though staff in a place as busy as this is always going to be overwhelmed. All-in-all, it was a VERY disappointing evening at Peppers.

Lived in Carmel for three years and Pepper's was one of our go-to places for freshly prepared food with a lot of menu choices. As others describe, the blood orange marguerita is pretty damn good. I liked the fact that they have a number of fish dishes on the menu from snapper, to salmon, to shrimp and you can get them in tacos, burritos, or with tortillas on the side and they just about all come with grilled onions and peppers plus lettuce and tomato, sour cream and guac. My wife prefers the tamales and the carne asada. Chips and salsa consistent and you get red and green. And true this is not true 'Mexican' but where besides a food truck in San Jose can you find real Tijuana street tacos in Norcal? And that isn't what most of us want when we roll into a sit down restaurant with full bar. Monterey, PG, and Carmel get more than their share of tourists but I was a local for three years and on those cold, rainy, windy February nights this place is filled with locals. And for a real treat walk across the parking lot on the side of the building to the PG Chataugua Hall, on a weekend night you'll hear the music, and for a small fee can enter and dance the calories away.

The Grilled Chili appetizer wasn't fully grilled (kinda tough, and its cheese stuffing wasn't completely melted). But the salsa and guacamole on its side were superb: fresh and ideally seasoned. The Chili Relleno was tasty but its breading was totally soggy . . . the whole thing was drowning in watery red sauce, which invaded the sides (re-fried beans and rice,) My companion said his enchilada was good, but also suffered from drenching by the sauce of the chili relleno he'd ordered as the other main on his combo plate. One more thing: They charge $1.50 for a side of sour cream. Not that we can't afford it, but . . . geeeeez!

3 words...blood orange margarita!!! Unfortunately I live 300 miles from Peppers, but I can't wait to return. Plus our waiter was the cheeriest dude ever. And...it was the most tastefully decorated Mexican restaurant I've ever seen. I also liked both the green & red salsas served w/the chips. Only complaint...my chicken taco came in a fried flour tortilla, not corn...not my fav, but the chicken mole enchilada made up for it...never the less...they still get 5 stars from me.

Good ritas. Chili verde was good, but I didn't think it was spicy. I think my wife did, but I'm not sure. Top notch stuff. The hand written menu was a little hard to read, but only because it had so much yummy food on it.

I've been to many Mexican places since I moved to California, and I'm going to start off by saying that I am not a big fan of the "mexi-cali" thing. This is a pretty fancy Mexican restaurant, even by California standards. The food is fresh and tasty, but it's just not the comfort-food style I grew up with. Expect gourmet Mexican made with the finest of ingredients. Don't expect mountains of cheese, meat, and re-fried beans on a tortilla with no veggies. If you enjoy that kind of thing, this is the place.

I live in San Diego and although I ate here about 18 years ago, I didn't really remember it and I wasn't sure how it would stack up to SD's great Mexican food. Intrigued by a mushroom and artichoke enchilada, I ventured into adventure-land. So glad I did as it was delicious with the right amount of heat. Friend had a chili verde burrito and said it had kick - as promised on the menu. The chips are light and flavorful. The salsas are authentic and full of spice...personal preference was the green salsa. Atmosphere is cozy and the service is great.

The place is noisy and crowded -- because the food is terrific and the diners are having a great time. I do not recall having better Mexican food anywhere. The wait for a table can get long at dinner time, so reservations can be a very good idea. (Reservation, I believe, means putting you on the waiting list when you call.) Service is surprisingly good, given how busy the place is, and the staff is very efficient at clearing tables and preparing for the next guests when diners have finished. Servings are large. Peppers is a must every time my wife and I are in Pacific Grove.

The food looks like Mexican food, but it isn't. It's for White people who don't like flavor, spice, or heat. OK service, horrible food. Always wonder what goes thru a waiters mind when he picks up 5 plates, that have about the same amount of food on them when he dropped the plates off. Another bad meal in Monterey.

This place motivated to sign up for yelp. The waiter could not tell me what he liked. This should have been a clue to run for the hills. The food came out fast. A little too fast it was luke warm. The chile verde was just '"ok" and the burrito chile colorado was salty. On a good side the green salsa was good. Hope this helps.

We save Peppers for when friends are in from out of town because it is a nice environment that is always full of people and commotion, the food portions are large, and the margaritas are strong. The chips and salsa you get at the table are great. Fresh, warm, and spicy. I usually order off the special menu. It never changes, so I can list some things and you'll have no trouble getting them. The mushroom artichoke enchiladas are my usual. You have the option of getting one or two, and I usually take the second one home for later. My boyfriend gets the Jambalaya without fail, and he also takes about half of it home. The Blood Orange Margarita is a great option if you don't plan on getting a pitcher of margarita. The Hornito's Pitcher is a great deal and is only like $20-$24.

I am originally from Austin, Texas so I am pretty hard to please with regards to Mexican food. I went here with my wife (also a former Texan) our daughter, son in law and three year old grand son recently. We all really enjoyed this place. Not the Tex Mex I grew up with but excellent. Lots of variety on the menu and high quality food. Service was good and the staff made sure that we were served quickly so my grand son was happy. Their Margaritas made with name brand tequilas were outstanding. Not the lemonade type mixtures with no punch you often get these days. Highly recommend.

A lot of people seem to love Peppers, but I personally feel like the food is rather marginal myself. After having lived in Pacific Grove for about 8 years, I've eaten there a number of times (maybe 15+). The highlight of the meal is always the chips and salsa, which they bring before you order (the chips are excellent). However, that's usually the best part of the experience. Pepper's food is "okay", but not great. It's maybe one or two steps up from Taco Bell in most cases (depending on what you order). In some cases, Taco Bell is actually better. For example, never order nachos of any kind at Peppers - they are a joke. Their chili Verde is passable (barely), but nothing special (if you are mexican, forget it - it's bland with very little flavor or spices, despite what the menu says - I've had better from a box). Their garlic prawns are actually very good. Most of the other dishes are a bit sketchy. Beans are always under cooked. Rice is okay, but not great (again, no real flavor to speak of). In most cases, the food has a bit of a sloppy/wet consistently to it, which I don't really care for. Basically, you are paying a rather high price for the cloth napkins and the atmosphere. The food, however, just really doesn't match up, at least as far as authentic mexican food goes. A lot of their dishes are very Americanized. The portions are excessively large and the quality just isn't there in a lot of the dishes. If you are seeking mexican food, and don't care about the ambiance, then hit up some place in Seaside, such as the food court at Mi Pueblo or maybe head out to Salinas. There's a place directly across from Harbor Freight in Salinas that serves very good mexican food (don't know the name, but it's a hole in the wall / quick mart sort of deal). For the money, I don't feel like Peppers is giving very good value any longer. There have just been so many new mexican places open up in Seaside over the last 10+ years - most of which provide twice the quality of food at half (or less!) the price. If you want real mexican food, visit yelp.com/biz/garcias-taq…

First of all, this is not exclusively a Mexican restaurant. Get over that idea right away. We have been coming here for many years, on our semi-regular jaunts to PG, and we eat here EVERY time we visit. The food is consistently very good, and the service is unfailingly good for such a busy restaurant. Almost every dish we have had at Pepper's has been well prepared and delicious. Only two of our many favorites are artichoke stuffed enchilada's, and the huge, very tasty jambalaya. The margaritas rock (!), and are themselves a reason to stop by and have some chips and salsa. The wine list is reasonably priced, with great variety and good wines, and they stock a nice selection of beers, as well. At times we don't make it to PG for a few months, but the wait staff still recognize us and treat us as though we were local regulars. That alone is worth considering. With (again) consistently good food, great margaritas, friendly and efficient wait staff, a fun, family friendly atmosphere, it remains on our list of favorite restaurants in PG. Try finding the quality and variety elsewhere, for the same price. You'll be back at Pepper's in no time. Just made it 5 stars. Don't know what I was thinking.

What a letdown. Our go-to place is Michael's Taqueria, also in Pacific Grove, and although we realize that Michaels' food is not "authentic" Mexican, it's clean, tasty and well-prepared, and the staff treat us well. We decided to order takeout from Pepper's because our visiting daughter prefers it. We ordered a chicken quesadilla, veggie fajitas, and a combo plate. My husband went to pick up the food (which cost about 60 percent more than Michael's), and received a sealed bag. We opened it to find that it contained two orders of veggie fajitas. Hubby called and got a lukewarm apology and was told that the rest of the order would take ANOTHER 15 minutes. Fine. Our daughter inspected her "veggie" fajitas, which consisted of diced tomatoes and a few pieces of red bell pepper--not an onion or green pepper to be found. When my husband picked up our food, it was apparent that it had been sitting there a long time--it probably had been there when my husband picked up the first batch. My quesadilla was cold and congealed, and his food was mediocre. I've never been a huge fan of Pepper's, but I've never had an experience THIS bad. Never again.

Three stars for service and vibe, two stars for food quality and taste. I was born and raised in San Diego. So far, I've not found better Mexican food. Well besides in Mexico of course... Anyway, the staff is always super friendly, the place is always busy and I like their chips and salsa (they give you 3 different kinds). I've ordered several entrees though and I'm always disappointed. The beans never seem to be cooked enough, the rice lacks flavor and the overall quality of the other ingredients is mediocre. I keep going back though because I really want to like this place more and I keep hoping I'll find something they make really well. But nice servers and a fun vibe aren't enough in the end... The food here is equivalent to the Mexican food they serve in Old Town San Diego, which if you're from San Diego, you'd never go there to eat if you're wanting solid Mexican food. And yes, I'm fully aware that they bill themselves as "Mexicali." There are other restaurants however, not in PG though, that pull off the "Mexicali" thing much better. Bummer.

We have been coming here for years, mostly because the kids like the place. The food is usually great but not always consistent. Sometimes the salsa is hot, sometimes not Sometimes the chili verde is hot, sometimes not. You get the idea. Tonight I tried the corn chowder. Wow, that was great. Good flavors, hot(temperature wise) and creamy I had the muscles as a side. There were 12 muscles. Good flavors but they smelled and tasted fishy. Probably not too fresh but they should have been being so close to the ocean-you should have been able to smell the sea and not the yuck. I tried the chili verde. It was a good amount of food+rice, beans and tortillas. But a little bland I tasted my granddaughters quesadilla-It was cheese what can I say. The red salsa was excellent tonight. Great kick This place is loud. Not with music but with people talking you get to sit in one big room so tune up your hearing aids. The bar is at the front of the restaurant. You can eat there too. The drinks were good. Had a shot of tequila along with a beer and my wife likes their margaritas. I know you regulars love this place but there has to be better Mexican food somewhere. LET ME KNOW

  • Kathryn M.

It was OK. That's about the best I can do for Peppers. The Mexican flavors were lacking, the tamale was a rock and the beans and rice were dialed in. I was hoping for some really good Mexican, having just moved to CA, but this is not the spot to try it. I do have to say that the service and atmosphere were pretty good. Just be sure to set up a reservation ahead of time or you'll be waiting with the other masses by the bar.

We went to Peppers last week and, the service was better than I remember though. It had been several years since I had been there. Laura had the fish tacos and they were good. I had their version of paella which was good but I think a saffron rice version would have been better.

Another wonderful restaurant in Pacific Grove! (For such a small area, I'm amazed at how many great places there are to eat) This is a bit more of a high-end Mexican restaurant than your average place, but it's well worth it. The food is always so fresh and the service is phenomenal. I'd highly recommend making a reservation before trying to come in for dinner on a weekend night as they are usually jam-packed. Try their prawns (any dish with prawns is very good here)...actually, you can pretty much order anything on the menu and I'm sure you'll be blown away!

  • Melody L.

I love this place! I have been coming here my whole life. It is one of the only PG spots where I can go sit at the bar, eat some awesome food and chat with other locals. I Love the green salsa, and the fresh fried chips! You can come here to indulge in some Enchiladas with a mole-inspired sauce and a Margarita. You can also come here on a budget and eat something healthy like the Guacamole Tostada, my personal staple, I literally eat here at least once a week. The staff is always friendly and I would name them off but they really are all great at what they do. My one piece of advice: Don't come here expecting authentic Sonoran cuisine or the run of the mill Mexican Food. Their dishes are all Fresh-Mex/Mexicali style and you have to be willing to think outside the box. This is one of the reasons I like it so much! I Love You Peppers!

I'll keep this review short and sweet. my GF and I are spending the weekend in Monterey over the New Years weekend and she mentioned this place called Peppers. She mentioned it was Mexican food which there is no shortage of around here. However this place just blew me away. I ordered the Chile Verde while the GF ordered the Garlic Shrimp. True to the name these guys specialize in PEPPERS! My Verde had the perfect blend of spicy heat and had great overall flavor period. The Verde contained large chunks of good well trimmed pork. Not greasy or fatty in any way.Black beans were perfectly cooked and rice was nice and moist and tasty especially with a little lime juice drizzled over top. Chips are about as good as most place but the salsas are fantastic. Chips arrive with a nice spicy Red sauce and a mild Green sauce. Mix the two for a tastebud explosion! Give this place a shot, it's well worth your time. OH.....the GF's shrimp was bathing in cloves of garlic and the tortillas were nice and warm and toasted. If you want Mexican that's a step above the rest then try Peppers.

Was just ok... When I think of great Mexican food, requirements include great guacamole, Perfect chips, and fantastic flavors to main dishes. Peppers pretty much was just ok. I've had better store-bought chips , the guac was boring and without any real flavor beyond avocado, and the entrees were pretty bland. I also had a cup of gazpacho, and that too wasn't impressive. Overall, food was just pretty uninspired and nothing memorable. With all the fantastic places to eat in the area, peppers is not one I'll be back to soon. Good points: Good margaritas Quick! Not so good points: Food taste Food presentation Service- not bad, but definitely not stellar or engaging. (my barely touched gazpacho was cleared from the table without any question of why it hadn't been consumed) For the price and lacking experience, it's unlikely I'll return.

Hmmm...unfortuately, I need to drop my rating. The chips and salsa remain to be excellent. My boyfriend asked the server what he preferred off the specials menu between the salmon and the swordfish tacos. The waiter said the salmon, and so bf agreed that salmon it is! Guess what...swordfish tacos were delivered...and they were super bland. I ordered the Mahi Mahi that was supposed to be spicey. Nah, it was mahi just slathered with so much watery saucy tomato stuff. Fish was bland. So...wasn't that great of an experience. I still have fond memories of this place, so I can't drop it down lower than 3-stars.

The food is ok, typical Mexican food. Portions are rather small as I got the Garlic Shrimp dish which had 6 shrimp but cost $20. My meal was served literally 5 minutes after the other 5 people at my table were served. They were finishing their meals when mine arrived. Not even much of an apology from the waiter. Also, the place gets super loud and it becomes a shouting match to have a conversation. Make sure you make a reservation too... I went one time without a reservation and was told that we could only eat at the bar without a reservation even though the restaurant was maybe half full.

(I originally posted this on March 23, 2011, but Yelp is screwed up and won't let me access my original account, so I'm re-posting). I've been going to Peppers off and on since moving to Carmel in 1983. I just went again this week (March 2011) and the place is exactly the same as it has always been: top notch. The food is great, the service is prompt, the ambiance is friendly, and the prices are reasonable. Dinner for three, including three drinks, was $79, including tip and tax. If you like really good Mexican food, this is the best on the Monterey Peninsula.

  • Susan S.

Ok ordered the recommended Paella, this is not authentic. Just a bunch of seafood on a bed of rice and too much red peppers and onions. There is no chicken or saffron in this dish. Thank goodness the red salsa they bring you with the chips was delish. I poured that over the seafood dish. The blood orange margarita had plenty of tequila, though it taste more like peaches. Must be a mix. Service was good.

Hands down best Mexican place! Food always good, service has always been great and when it comes to Margaritas some of the best I have ever had! Everyone we have ever taken there loves it! It is not a big place and it can get crowded after 5:30 but the food is fantastic!

I do not understand the draw of this place and the glowing reviews. I've been a handful of times over the years trying to find something on the menu that blows me away. That has yet to happen. I'm starting to believe that the people who like it have never had good Mexican food. Yet the place is always busy during feeding time. Surely it can't be the food. Can it? My experience: Chips and salsa: Fine but I've definitely have had better salsa at dive restaurants in Marina and Seaside. Food: Borderline institutional quality except made with extremely fresh ingredients. That's the problem with Peppers: Zero personality or flavor but the ingredients are fresh. So everything tastes like something you could whip up at home if you had zero creativity, no spices, and a couple of fresh tomatoes and avocados to work with. So why all the glowing reviews and crowds? Here's my theory: it's not the food that's the draw, it's the full-bar--there are not too many of those in downtown PG. Tip: Avoid the Enchilada Mole platter. I got a little depressed when the server placed the dish in front of me. The sauce was watery and anemic. It still makes me sad to think about it.

One of our new favorite spots- Peppers has great service and delicious food. The best part is the margaritas are always on the rocks with plenty of salt on the rim-yum! My husband always gets the Quesadillas and I go for Chile Rellenos and we both leave happy.

The barkeep noticed my baby wanted to dip her chips and brought out the kid-friendly salsa. That scored all the stars right there. The margaritas are solid.

The folks who run the joint are super friendly I love the salsa and yes.. they are spicy! The verde salsa is a sweet salsa with a kick at the end..... the red salsa is good ol' fashioned caliente status. The chips were crispy and tasty.... I got the cheese enchilada platter-- they were okay... beans tasted and looked more like chili and the rice was meh.... The enchilada sauce tasted burnt... meaning it had been chilling for a minute.... a long minute in a pot somewhere... The mahi mahi tacos according to pops were aight The brother thought his beef taco and enchilada plate were better than that turtle place in Monterey.... This is considered a Mexi-Cali done up scale meaning that if you like your food from East San Jose or Watsonville the prices for some usual cheapy eats are going to give you a WTF! For a diet coke, two iced teas and the entrees... around 47 dollars (you could feed a family of twenty on 47 dollars of dare I say it.. higher quality and taste from other places).. yes it is Pacific Grove and yes I get it... "upscale"..... The alcoholic drinks have catchy names and are creative.... the decor is cute and charming with the Peppers theme.. BUT I have had better... for cheaper.... Compared to other Mexican places I have tried in the area this one is the winner... however the area is between Carmel, PG and Monterey only... after that... I would not hesitate to go elsewhere.

On Sunday after a day of watching football my roommates and I decided to head down to peppers for dinner. To start we ordered a pitcher of the Blood Orange Margaritas. They were delicious just the right amount of sweet and you could still taste a subtle hint of the tequila. Very refreshing. We also ordered a side of guacamole to start with, but it never came to the table. =( I ordered the Gouda quesadilla as my entree, it is a small plate and I was aware of this, I was not that hungry so that why I decided on it. Inside the quesadilla was artichoke hearts, olives, peppers, and onions, and it was served with guacamole and salsa fresca. It was so tasty and it is the item that keeps me coming back to peppers.

Blood red margarita is the best. I had a chicken burrito with black beans and it was great. The service was quick and attentive, my friend ordered a beef burrito that was deliver as a chicken. They promptly brought another one to our table. Great atmosphere and I definitely would recommend this place.

i always have a mad good time when i come here. every few months i get a hard core craving to spend an evening soaking this place up. the blood orange margarita is THE BEST DRINK EVER. so so sooo tasty in a refreshing, unique, but not too sweet way. the food kicks some ass. always delicious, up there with the best, maybe not the absolute best. the source of peppers' amazingness(5 star rating) is sorta mysterious. definitely to do with the atmosphere partially. this is my number one choice for a date night in PG, even though its a bit loud. the noise actually makes me feel more comfortable than quiet places, like, no one besides the person at my table is gonna hear it. the noise seems to create privacy. its the sound of happiness! the service is impressive. servers are speedy, friendly, sharp on their toes. they earn a generous tip from me every time.

BEST SALSA. This is my FAVORITE restaurant for Mexican food. I love the atmosphere and the tacos, but all the food is amazing. Chips and salsa are better than most places, and it is a good place to go out for lunch or dinner with friends or family any night of the week.

Every year we go to Monterey and almost always go to Peppers! We love Peppers, it is the best Mexican food in Monterey/Pacific Grove! They give you a lot of food for a decent price. It is very tasty. They also have vegetarian dishes! The atmosphere is great, it is small though, which is why 4 stars, sometimes there is a long wait to be seated. Timing is everything! But it is worth it, a Pacific Grove gem!

Booooo. Thumbs down. Uninspired, generic food. Nice colors but bland. This restaurant use to be a warm, festive spot. Now it's blah. The new owner has no love and it shows. Hopefully they will sell it so the breath of life can once again reinvent this once great spot. If you go, I recommend you sit at the bar with some chips and salsa and a beer. They can't really mess that up and the salsa is actually pretty damn good. If you want fresh Mexican you're better off getting take out at Michael's and chillin at the beach. For dinner out in PG you've got Petra to the left and Passionfish to the right.

They put some delicious, addictive chemical in their Mahi Mahi that causes me to crave it fortnightly. I go to Peppers at least once every time I'm in the Pacific Grove area. The food is delicious especially when paired with one of their delicious margaritas. The atmosphere is really laid back and fun, and the wait staff is always nice. I've gone to the fancy seafood places nearby, and they don't hold a candle to Peppers. My only complaint is that I always want to order something new, but I can't get away from the roasted red pepper and garlic Mahi Mahi. Everytime someone tells me they're going to the Monterey area, I tell them they have to go to Peppers!

When I lived in Monterey, this place was one of my favorite restaurants, by far. If not my overall favorite... the paella for two is great and the price is hard to beat. We always had enough left over for lunch and dinner the next day. The margaritas are phenomenal too! Oh, and the sopapillas with ice cream :) Like a lot of Monterey Bay restaurants, it is kinda cramped for space. Its also a very popular spot on, well, most nights of the week actually. So unless you like to gamble, call ahead and reserve a table! Highly recommended!

Hands down my favorite Mexicali restaurant. (Not traditional Mexican) Can't go wrong with the fresh caught swordfish tacos! The service has been great every time I've gone. Very hard working staff that keeps your chip bowl and drink full! They can get pretty crowded on weekends but it's definitely worth it.

Mexican seafood restaurant in Pacific Grove; I would say overall, the food is solid, but it's very crowded and noisy. The ambiance is so-so. I had their corn chowder soup which was decent. Not that memorable. More chowder than corn. I also had their red pepper and garlic snapper which is probably my favorite entree there, paired with my mango margarita. Flan for dessert was average. Just OK.

The food was ok - the portions were large . I had the Hard Taco Plate Combo - the taco shells weren't warm and become very soggy within minutes after recieving my plate. The free chips & salsa were excellent. The restaurant had a nice atmosphere and it was very clean. I have plans to eat there again...

My Friend and I had a random road trip up to Monterey and our hotel was in Pacific Grove. We found Peppers on yelp and decided to walk over - it was only a 15min walk downtown. The Restaurant is pretty tiny - slightly cramped - but is nicely laid out. We only had to wait about 10mins to be seated but it being a Friday night, we waited about the same to be greeted by our server. The salsas are more of a dip vs. a scoop - you get a tamatillo and a "roasted flavored" red salsa. Pretty good- they keep them refilled but Ive had better. My friend ordered La Paz Chicken - which she unfortunately said the flavor was bland and did not blend. She said that the chicken felt grilled by itself and then just had guacamole and whatever else placed on top. The price for her dish was pretty high for a whole in the wall: $14.95 I ordered a cheese enchilada and requested that it came with Mole sauce and it was amazing :) The enchilada was HUGE but for one @ 9.95 it just seemed a little high too- thankfully i didn't get the two item combo b/c that would have been 13.95. Ok food for a slightly high price is what it is in the end - but it seems a great hit with the locals.

Sigh, I miss living in Monterey. Especially the food in Monterey. My roommate and I would always go to Peppers for some grubbin' food and every time it was amazing. I made it a point to try different things on the menu, my favorites being the chile rellenos, the prawns gonzales, and the mushroom and artichoke enchiladas. Their chips and salsa were good too. No meal was complete without a blood orange margarita too. BOMB! Whenever I go back to visit, I always make sure to hit up Peppers. No trip to Monterey/Pacific Grove is complete with out it.

If i could leave -1 stars i would. My fiance and i had dinner there a few days ago and it was Horrible.I ordered the enchilada plate with a taco. The enchilada was so tough i had to cut it with my knife. The taco was made out of some type of flower instead of the customary corn tortillas. The taco tasted terrible. We left 95% of our food before leaving. We seen our waiter only one time just to give us our order. The prices were through the roof.Bad Food,Bad Service and Bad Prices. We said it was the worst food we had during our week vacation to Carmel , Monterey and Pacific Grove. Will NOT RETURN.

I'v eaten here several times and liked every thing I'v orderd. But if you'r a garlic fan order the Garlic Garlic Garlic Shrimp. (talk about rich) One time I'm gonna order it to go and bring it home and put it over a pile of pasta. YUMMMMMMY. AND I ALWAYS .whenever in town, get the coconut fudge macadania nut ice cream, and an iced tea (thats at least 1ce a week)

I've noticed that Mexican food in Central California has a very clean and simple flavor, unlike its sloppy, greasy socal counterpart. Peppers seems to be the happening place in downtown PG. We hardly ever go because it is usually way too crowded (and Zocalo was always a happy alternative). I've always enjoyed the spicy, exciting direction Peppers takes their dishes. I don't think I've been there since I've been of drinking age, though. The Blood Orange Margarita is calling my name!

If this is the best Mexican food in Pacific Grove, I'd recommend driving the 20 minutes to Salinas for the best Mexican food NEAR Pacific Grove. Seriously. Being in the heart of Mexican food awesomeness and having had some pretty damn good Mex from SandyEggo to Santa Barbara, I can tell you flat out that this place rates a 100% solid meh. Anyway...with the 3 generous glasses of red wine, yummy cheese, and ritz crackers at the OSA guiding me, I rolled the Mediterranean food dice and ordered the Paella. Mmmmmm...Saffron goodness! Only when the large oval plate of fail was guided in front of me, did it hit me thru the wine fog like an unlicensed NAFTA truck...NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!...there IS no saffron within 7000 miles of freaking Mexicali!!! What was before me looked suspiciously like Mexican rice, salsa and seafood. Ay Caramba!! Esto no es Paella! The rice was uninspired and without flavor (is bland a flavor?). 3/4 of it was left on the plate with the other 1/4 tasting like the hot sauce I slathered onto it. However, the clams, mussels, shrimp, and fish were fresh, and cooked nicely. Oh and also, the water was outstanding...cold and flavorless. They get 2 stars for the attentive service and the benefit of the doubt that their MEXICAN food is good, since the place was slammed with smiling and happy diners. Then again...the free chips and salsa were also bleah. Not sure if I'd give them another run, since there are so many better places on the peninsula, not to mention SandyEggo.

I don't know why there are so fruitful reviews. The place was halfway decent, at best. Don't get me wrong, great location, staff, and atmosphere. The food on the other hand was very plain and boring. On top of that, it wasn't cheap at all. Quite expensive for what you get. I haven't lived in the area long but I could guess there are better Mexican places to eat.

The Margs were amazing! (so good i think i had one too many) The chips are really yummy- the salsa is ehh. We ordered the nacho app and it was a huge portion for 2. The were def. yummy! By the end of it I was completely full and he was pretty full but we decided to order an entree and split it (aka i have a bite). Like i said i had one too many so i cant really rmr if the entree was as good- i remember we had cheese enchiladas. He finished most of the plate so I am guessing they were great. Pretty picky when it comes to mexican food- just the options in all over Monterey bay are overwhelming. This is def. a place we will go to again though. Enjoyed the atmosphere and like i said the MARGS!

If you ever drive on Highway 101 through Gilroy, at some stage or other (mainly dependent on the direction of the wind), your olfactory sense will be overwhelmed by the smell of garlic, wafting over from the garlic processing plant just off the highway. The day after thoroughly enjoying Peppers' Garlic Prawns, I'm pretty sure anyone within a 300 yard radius of me would have been fooled into thinking they were in or near Gilroy. As I was at Laguna Seca for the MotoGP race, I'm fairly sure I confused thousands of people.

I've been down to Pacific Grove and Monterey quite a few times, and I'm looking at it from a San Francisco point of view. Food - really good. The best? I wouldn't go that far, but the food is really fresh & clean. They also add a really good mix of spices to traditional Cali / Mex foods. Though more on the seafood side, I really enjoyed the Jambalaya in addition to their classic Cali / Mex dishes. More importantly, the reason Peppers absolutely deserves a 5 is that it is one of the only places with a fun, lively atmosphere on the weekends. Pacific Grove is nice, but the town is asleep by about 8pm. The crowd at Peppers is a good mix of families and young adults looking to have a few drinks and great food with friends.

Still mediocre. I got tired of this place years ago but gf & I decided to drop by for lunch. Service was okay nothing great. The salmon tacos were underseasoned. The Santa Fe cheese enchilada platter was good. But the food hasn't changed much if at all in a decade or more. There's still too much reliance on raw (or nearly raw) onions and sour cream. The black beans taste like they came straight out of a can. The rice has no flavor whatsoever. This is "Mexican" food for people who don't really want Mexican food.

My wife and I have eaten here many times over the last 10+ years. We've never been disappointed about the food. Service sometimes a little off but that's dependent upon each individual server and when you are there. Ate here again on Saturday afternoon, 5/28. Had the Mission District Burrito puerco. Delicious, plenty of food, hot, great guacamole on top, very tasty beans n rice on the side. My wife had the Tostada polla combo. Same thing, very tasty. Our waiter Juan was very attentive, he brought our drinks quickly after ordering, food came out hot off the line. Had dessert- split the Mexican Chocolate cake and 2 coffees. Delicious cake, with a hint of amaretto. Another great meal, See you next time Peppers!

This is one of my favorite spots in Pacific Grove. I love the huge menu they have and I have yet to fall into the trap of just ordering the same thing every time. I really enjoy the chips and salsa and the salsa is so good. I've gone with an extended group for a birthday party on a Friday night once and it worked out great, just make sure to make reservations ahead of time.

The portions are great, the owners friendly and the food is fabulous. I love that they serve both red and green salsas with their homemade chips. I work nearby and we often get their nachos for take-out. It is usually really busy, so make a reservation. They are closed Tuesdays too! Give it a try, you won't regret it.

Oh, I miss Peppers. I guess we were too spoiled living in PG, just a few blocks from the Cal-Mex joint. Now living in the Bay Area, we dream if Peppers and their two item combination plates, crispy chips with verde and chili salsa, tostadas with fresh guacamole, soft rice and perfectly baked beans, fresh tacos larger than my hands, and my favorite dish of all: deep fried calamari with special spicy tartar sauce served with soft flour tortillas. It's time for a 2 hour drive south...

  • Christina H.

Their guac was good, and I'm picky about my guac. I had a glass of sangria and started with the sweet corn soup, which was decent. I was starving so I just needed something to hold me over until my fish tacos came out. It came in a soft tortilla form, which was I loved. And rice and beans, plus more guac! It was a huge platter. Pricing was great and it was perfect for a lunch get together with a large group. Afterwards, upon returning to our vacation home, we found out the home owner originally started Peppers.

We've been there twice in one month, and absolutely love it! I did not give 5 stars because I don't absolutely love the margaritas I've sampled, but that's okay. The food itself is sooooooo good, and I've lived in San Diego for 15++ years, and have sampled loads of it! I'm so glad we found this place because the food, the chips/salsa, the servers, the bus people, the hostess, are all top notch!!! We'll be back!

I was very excited to find a good Mexican restaurant in PG. I ordered a basic shredded beef burrito with rice and beans and wow was I disappointed. There is nothing special about their food. Their ambiance, chips& salsa earned them my one star. If you want a nice environment and to drink-then you will enjoy this spot. If you want delicious food, keep looking.

I want to start by saying I have been a long time Peppers fan. I love the service and the consistent food. Tonight I was craving my usual mushroom arthicoke enchilada, and as always I order a chilli relleno on the side for my boyfriend and I to share. My boyfriend ordered the garlic prawns which he said were mediocre tonight. The problem began when my plate came and the enchillda and relleno were combined. No problem, everyone one makes mistakes. I asked to have it corrrected and I was quickly brought back the same plate with the same soggy relleno on the side, and the same enchilada covered in more relleno sauce than enchilada sauce. The presentation was less than appetizing. I was turned off, they said they would be bringing me a new plate. Fiffteen minutes later, and my boyfriend's shrimp now in cold cream sauce. Still no new food for me. However, they were kind enought to leave my mess in front of me, which went untouched! I had no choice but to ask for the bill (now I am wondering where the nearest drive through is.) They brought our bill , and it included my uneaten dinner! Wow! I did ask them to remove it and they complied. Two of the three people we encountered seemed to not care at all. Will not be back any time soon. I want Peppers to be what they use to be.

Really yummy California style Mexican food. Great, spicy salsa and quick service. We had the Artichoke and Mushroom Enchiladas, and thought they were awesome! My husband and I shared the plate with two enchiladas, plus the mushroom appetizer and it was plenty. Reasonably priced and tasty!

While visiting my husband in Monterey, before moving out there myself, we were shopping around for an apartment/house and had completely forgot that it was Valentine's Day and we didn't have a reservation anywhere! :0 Luckily enough, while we were looking at an apt. at 7-mile Drive, the man showing us the apt. called down to Peppers and made us a reservation! (We weren't familiar with the area, so didn't really know where to go) I'm so glad we ended up trying out Peppers...it became one of our favorite places to eat in Monterey (Pacific Grove, actually). It is always packed on Fri/Sat nights...so call ahead and make a reservation. What's good? Their blood-orange margaritas, any of their fish tacos (salmon, swordfish), their carne asade steak dinner, and their CORN CHOWDER! I can't tell you how many times I went there JUST for their corn chowder. It's a cute little place, fast and friendly service and reasonably priced. Enjoy!!

Hear me out here. Previous happy customer: NEVER returning. They blew us off, unapologetically, for throwing a ton of food we carefully asked THREE TIMES to be put into go-boxes. We spent $$ and got treated like turds. I went with a friend, a great chef. Our first choice, Stokes Adobe, was closed. I'd had really good meals at Peppers, and S. (friend) got excited because he doesn't get good Mexican food in NYC. I promised him a good lunch at a deservedly popular place. We did as always: ordered damned near every dish, so we could taste. We ordered 3 appetizers, 3 entrees, and side dishes. We laughingly told the manager, when she delivered a couple of plates with her eyebrows raised, that we ALWAYS order a ton of food to taste, and that, yes, we'd be getting go-boxes. Food arrived: we dug in. Only a couple of items impressed with flavor, and I was disappointed in the chile rellenos, since they were great before. These were, alas, bad. Tasteless goo. Big problem: Chicken Caribe. The menu description was mouthwatering: the execution was DISMAL. Overcooked: it didn't even bend. Dry beyond dry. We poked it with our forks: yes, it was dead. We apologetically summoned our server. La Manager came over, impatiently/transparently displaying suspicion. (I waited tables for 9 years, and know the tricks people pull: put glass on their plates, hair on their food, eat half of a dish and then send it back and request a different dish. We aren't those people: we entered in good humor, just wanting to enjoy each other's company and the allegedly good food.) Instead of being gracious, she said, "I guess you want me to take this off the bill because you ordered too much." S. said, "We didn't order too much. We are taking everything to go. This dish is unacceptable. You know it." She got huffy, and S. told her, "I run a restaurant. I would never speak to a customer this way." We were left alone to sample the rest of the food. The smothered burrito was delicious. Nothing else was great. There was a sameness, indistinction, like everything was garnished or seasoned with identical ingredients. (See photos for sameness of dishes.) Until our flan arrived, we were all "Eh." The flan was as good as flan can get in a restaurant that isn't milking the cows out back. THE FLAN WAS GREAT. Ugliness ensued. We'd told our waiter, the manager, AND the busperson (not a boy--a man in his fifties) that we wanted all the food to go. But he didn't speak English enough to understand our words and hand signals. He threw EVERYTHING INTO THE GARBAGE. To me, this is not only a tragedy but a sin. To waste all that food was dumbfounding. Already feeling guilty for a second summoning of La Manager, our worst fears were realized when she started to strip naked and dance on the table, screaming, "These customers are trying to rip me off!" in an Ethel Merman voice. KIDDING, of course. Just trying to get back with the only power left to a Yelper who's been ripped off. Actually, she put her hand on her hip and effectively dared us to get her to do anything about the mistakes. She didn't give a rat's ass. She said (words to this effect), "You're the kind of people who come in, looking for things to go wrong, so you can get freebies." Uh, hello, Miss Nasty, NOT. We came in smiling and joking: you served us a rubber chicken: we didn't want to eat or pay for it. We tried to enjoy everything else, valiantly, promise. We didn't finish the eleventeen dishes because we were going to get go-boxes, your staff failed, and you were nasty when we expressed our disappointment. I was already heartsick over her attitude, didn't want to fight. She begrudgingly offered to comp ONE ENTREE. One, out of ten plates her staff threw into the trash. S. is more diplomatic than I, even when challenging a fellow professional about standards/ quality of food/service. Even though she offered injustice, he ordered two more flans to go. He pointed out that he'd tipped 20%, and that her treatment of us was unacceptable, and no way to treat customers. (He spent big money, but hardly acted "entitled.") I can't express my disappointment in every aspect of this meal, and would never go back. Talk about a buzzwrecker. "Disappointment" means that we'd had our hearts set on enjoying something I'd promised my friend would enjoy, as I had before. I'm sure the tourists will LOVE it, like they love "fine dining" at Fisherman's Wharf and the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. Like morons do. Ga-hilk. Fie on you, Manager, for thinking a bottom line is more important than making one caring customer happy. I didn't ask you to bend into a pretzel, I just think you should have made up for your staff mistake more than giving me a free burrito on a $150 tab. Do you think this sounds like the old joke, "The food is terrible and the portions are so small"? My family isn't as particular, and I could doctor the food in my own kitchen.

Love this place. Cute atmosphere, friendly service, and yummy food. I had the artichoke/mushroom enchiladas for lunch, and they were terrific. My husband had the fish tacos and enjoyed them very much. We polished off the chips and salsa early, and turned down the waitress' offer of a refill. Nevertheless, she brought over another basketful, "just in case". She was right. We really wanted to have the Mexican Chocolate Cake, but we were stuffed. A great place, you won't be disappointed.

yummyyummyyummyyummyyummyyummyyummy We were visiting from Texas, the home of Tex-Mex, and wanted to see how Mexi-Cali food compared. If Mexi-Cali food is anything like what we ate at Pepper's, then it takes our vote ANYDAY! We had a sampling of enchiladas, chile relleno, tacos, and a huge-ass pork burrito. It was amazing. Fresh. Tasty. Delicious. The tomatillo salsa alone was enough to make our visit a success. They have a lot more adventurous offerings on their menu, but we wanted to try the standard stuff to make our comparison. A little on the pricey side for this type of cuisine, but well worth it for the portion sizes and flavor!

Ahh, such fond memories of eating here while growing up. I must have been here 100+ times as a kid. This place was a staple for my parents and me whenever we'd drive to the coast for the day. I was very happy when I came here a little while ago and found that not much changed! The tacos were exactly as I remembered. I love the interior, with lots of peppers everywhere. Very relaxed and inviting atmosphere.

If sanitation is not an issue for you, try this place out. I'm sure everyone has eaten at places that have had roaches (take that as you will--an implication, not an accusation, so that I may follow Yelp's criteria), I usually just don't like to know about it . I finally tried this place out (even with prior knowledge of the sanitation), not for the food, but for some drinks. The ambiance is 5 stars, service was phenomenal, and an overall good time. Overall, 2.75 stars, so I rounded up.

After several visits to rather dismal Mexican restaurants in the area, my husband and I were thrilled to happen upon Peppers while out for a walk in Pacific Grove. The chips and salsa were great, and all the many entrees we tried were delicious, my favorite being the enchiladas. Service was awesome, which is not always easy to find in this area...

I've been trying to limit the amount of 4 and 5 star reviews I give out, but Peppers deserves 4 stars. I've eaten there for years with my family and it's always very good. Everything tastes great, the serving sizes are huge, and the staff is very nice. The Monterey-area has a lot of dining options, but this place is good enough that we take out-of-town guests here. I had the salmon tacos last time. Awesome.

FOUR STARS! AT LEAST FOR THE MARGARITAS AND CHIPS AND SALSA. Because that's all I had at Peppers, but let me tell you, those were some tasty margaritas, and the chips weren't half-bad either. Chill setting, friendly waitress, and it looked like there was a long wait for a table in a crowded restaurant, which must mean the food is good, right? The only sad thing is that the waitress said Peppers closed around 9ish usually, or whenever it slowed down. I wished it was open later so I could get another margarita!

Best margaritas in town! The food is also delicious and well balanced with fresh ingredients. I usually come here about once every couple of weeks and have never been disappointed with anything I've ordered.

I remember eating at Peppers twice when I first arrived in PG. The first meal, I was having a sausage dish which was decent. The second time around was a disaster. A simple chicken burrito wasn't fully cooked. The rice looked like it was sitting inside the pot for two days. And the overall taste was blah, as in blah, I may get sick. We paid the bill, and walked up to the Grove Market for a fresh sandwich. That's how bad my Peppers experience was. The next week we discovered Zocalo, and had a long amiable dining experience with them until they closed down last year. I won't be coming to Peppers though when I want Mexican. The search goes on...

I don't understand the draw to this place. When I want good Mexican food, this place is not on my top list of places to eat nor does it come close. The food is sub-par, not spectacular.

  • R. A.

the margaritas alone are 5 stars...a little pricy at $12 (for the ultimate) but I promise you wont regret it, its like 3 margaritas in one and tastes great!! I love their chips and salsa, cheese enchiladas and fajitas. Service is always good, even when busy. No, it is not authentic Mexican, but there are plenty of places between monterey and salinas to get that if thats what you're craving. its funny that people list that as a negative point, when its called peppers mexicali cafe. Try it out!!

Peppers has won me over!!! I still don't consider this the Best Mexican Food in Monterey County as constantly decided by voters in the weekly paper, but, they have some dishes here that have really impressed me lately. I could eat their dessert Sopaipillas every day. Its a friend pastry with honey and vanilla ice cream. Do yourself a favor and save room for some of this!!!!!

HANDS DOWN OUR FAVORITE! Consistent, friendly, great prices and family friendly. Awesome green salsa, fresh chips and margaritas. Try it "Al Carbon" (grilled chicken or steak). 9 years and counting- WE LOVE PEPPERS!

Uhmm , just check out the picture above for the cheese enchilada. Definitely get the green sauce with it. It's soooo complimentary. The best enchilada I've ever had. I would have never found this place if I hadn't been searching on YELP for places to eat in the area.... so Thanks Yelpers!

This place does the business. Why? Because it is Americanized-Mexican food which probably appeals to a bigger market, thus the Mexicali title. That being said this is pretty good food, nothing special. And speaking of specials, don't be impressed by their list of daily specials. Every time I go in the specials are the same. Good service, just not great value for half a plate of rice and beans. Dinner for 2 with 2 margies = $48

LOVE this place. Great food, friendly atmosphere and wonderful margaritas. Gets crowded and hard to get a table some nights so I don't know I want to let too many other people know about this place but I still have to give it a five star as although not the poshest place they never let you down.

One of the best meals we had on our three day visit to the coast. Had the Al Carbone tacos. Chips were great starter as were both salsas that came with them. The wife and I shared the taco plate, thanks to the waiter for bringing us some chipotle salsa to really spice thing up. The tacos were fantastic and plenty large enough that sharing the platter was plenty of food. We did order a flan to go...again, fantastic, one of the best we have ever had! We will certainly be sure to stop on our next visit.

We came here on a suggestion from a friend, and it did not disappoint. When we arrived, it was around 6pm. A little early in my thought, but already pretty busy. We waited for a table and ordered some drinks at the bar. Let me just say: the blood orange margarita is one of the best drinks I've ordered anywhere. Do yourself a favor and ask for a pitcher. The service was brilliant, and the food was tasty. Decent portions, but not overwhelming, and also vegetarian friendly. A lot of people clearly like this place, and I can absolutely see why. If you're in the Monterey area and want some good Mexican food with good drinks, head over and try this place out.

Great food and excellent drinks. I had the Santa fe enchilada platter. It was flavorful and had both red and green enchilada sauce smothering the three enchiladas. Three of us had the blood orange margarita and were very glad we did. I will be back each time we visit Monterey.

One of the best restaurants around. Their two salsas (mild verde & spicy red) are phenomenal. If you share a three item combo with someone it is a great deal and there will be plenty of food.

I happened upon this place when looking for a casual dinner spot before driving home from a day in Monterey, and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it! I got the steak tacos, which were on their special menu, and they were on par with or better than any steak tacos I've had. The steak was tender, delicious, and plentiful, and the plate came with plenty of guacamole (I usually run out of this topping). They also had great salsas to go with their chips. Also, they have Bohemia on the menu, which is one of my favorite beers and hard to find outside of Mexico! It was rather noisy inside the restaurant, but that was pretty much the only drawback. I'd definitely come back again on future trips to the area!

We came here during a weekend getaway and were very pleased! There was a bit of a wait, but that just meant that we had one more delicious margarita than were were planning on! Chips and salsa were good, particularly the tomatillo salsa. Alex, our waiter, was very helpful recommending a good dish. I ended up going with my usual (beef taco, chicken enchilada combo) and a blood-orange margarita. The drink was SO tasty and packed quite a punch! The food, though, was even BETTER. The beef was cubed and perfectly seasoned, the cheese and lettuce fresh; the taco shell quickly fell apart but was still crispy and light. The enchilada red sauce was super tasty with a decent kick, and the black beans were perfectly cooked and fresh. My wife had a guacamole burrito and was very happy as well. Overall, this is probably some of the best Mexican food I've had in a good long time. I'd forgotten how good it could be when it's prepared fresh! :-)

One of the best Mexi-Cali restaurants on the Monterey Peninsula and one of my favorites in general. Fresh Mexican food with excellent daily specials. Some of my favorites have been the New York Strip steak fajitas, Jamacian Curry Prawns, or Mahi Mahi tacos. But even their simple chicken tacos and enchiladas from their menu are very tasty as well, so if you want to stay traditional then there you go. Their salsas served with their tortilla chips are excellent too (both a red and salsa verde which are both pretty spicy) They also serve up excellent margaritas by the pitcher with excellent tequila choices. Great for smaller parties and definitely make reservations particularly if you're going on the weekend (after 6pm) as it fills up fast.

I visited a few weeks ago and the food was fantastic! I felt that the food was fairly authentic and very fresh. The salsa was great, and the servers were friendly. I will definitely be back. My only complaint: the prices. To me, Mexican food is usually pretty cheap, and this place was a little more than what I expected. But then again, it is Pacific Grove, and low prices are hard to come by. At least there were large portions to feed me twice to justify the price.

Since I dine alone a lot (due to work travel, not because I don't have any friends!) I appreciate a restaurant that has a bar that serves the full menu. I settled into may favorite spot... at a corner of the bar... and ordered a much recommended blood orange margarita. It was pretty darned good. Ordered veggie quesadilla, which was really good, and a house salad, which was presented nicely but over dressed (should have asked for dressing on the side). I particularly enjoyed the pile of jicama! The guac served with the quesadilla was excellent. The bartender was very nice and attentive, the music was good, and I really enjoyed the experience overall.

Eh. Feh. After a day of Whale Watching with the family out on the water (where else would you Whale Watch?) it was decided we would do an early dinner at Pepper's. What can I say other than that the food quality and flavor were inconsistent. I had Grilled Swordfish "Fajitas" and this was quite good. Way too much beans and rice. Swordfish grilled nicely, but the peppers and onions were sauteed down to homogeneous undifferentiated tissue. Chicken Caribe was not so Caribe as it could be. A tad bland. As was the Jambalaya. My Parents are Vegetarian and their dishes rocked. Artichoke Quesadilla was awesome. Grilled Portabella "Fajitas" incredible. These literally blew away any of the other dishes served. Maybe they should become a Vegetarian place? Service, well, not great, but not terrible. Like the food it had high and low spots. Would I come back? Well, there are tons of places to eat in the area so I am not sure I would. You could do better, you could do worse. Eh--feh. Left me saying, "Whatev."

Short and sweet lunch menu... had the one item combo today - the Spicy Chile Verde. It wasn't spicy but there were nice chunks of pork inside my medium sized flour tortilla. Their salsa verde is a bit more up my alley than their red and they give you a nice dallop of sour cream if you like. Service is friendly as always and I love their clean airy ambiance.

I love this restaurant. There's a Mexican flare to every dish, and they serve quite a bit of seafood (mmm!). Friendly waiters, delicious entrees and a good selection of beverages, in addition to dessert. There's a nice, small homely restaurant feel once inside as well. Sometimes a tad expensive, but WELLLLL worth it.

Haven't been here in years. Always felt the place was overrated. This time I had the mushroom and artichoke enchiladas, they were really good. I was afraid the mushrooms would be too mushroomy but no, they added a nice meaty texture. It was full of artichokes too. Sauce was delicious. The grilled shrimp plate was pretty boring. Sangria was eh. Service was very good.

Yummy! That is the best word to describe this restaurant! Any time my husband and I are in the Monterey area we make it a point to come to this restaurant. (And we've eaten at plenty of Mexican restaurants since we're from SF.) Ironically we found it by accident as we were wandering around Pacific Grove 6 years ago. Ever since then we've been hooked!! The freshly made, homemade chips and salsas (red and green) are fantastic and, oh so addicting! We've had the spinach and artichoke enchiladas, beef taco (my husband KILLED the homemade shell cuz it was freshly deep fried flour tortilla!), chicken enchiladas, and beef tamale (one of the best tamales I've eaten and I LOVE tamales!). Portions are big and plenty so come hungry! Too bad we're always too full to try dessert so we can't comment on them. But, based on what we've seen, if the desserts look as good as they taste, then thank God we never have room for them cuz we'd be even more hooked on this restaurant! Waiting time has varied for us. Friday and weekend nights are packed so the longest we've waited has been about an hour. Last week we came for lunch and were seated immediately even though it was about 80% full (and it was a weekday!). Definitely would recommend this restaurant to anyone! And I wish we lived closer so that we can eat here more often!

I am starting to think it's not possible for a place to be a really good Mexican restaurant without having been adorned with tacky ethnic accoutrements such as sombreros, pinatas, chili pepper light strings and ponds filled with plastic fish. Pepper's is good, but I wouldn't rush back. When in Monterey, I suppose... I don't imagine there are many good Mexican food spots there. The atmosphere is actually great - loud, boisterous colors splashed over adobe-like walls, old wooden tables and chairs, very nice staff. The food was adequate, but definitely lacked that seemingly-necessary authentic SoCal Mexican food flair. The margaritas=good. I had two of them. Probably would have had a third, but I was out to eat with my friend's parents and we wouldn't want them thinking I'm a lush or anything.

One of the best Mexican restaurants I've ever been to! A perfect mix of traditional combos with more unique fare, inspired by their proximity to the freshest of fresh seafood. I had salmon tacos that were delicious--yummy tortillas with the perfect texture and taste; delicious black beans with just the right amount of onion and flavor; salmon cooked perfectly so not dry at all; fresh lettuce and cheese......all of it! I also tried their blood orange margarita--quite good, and full of delcious alcohol, but not the greatest drink ever to slide down my throat. Points for originality though! Our service was extremely friend and efficient. One of the best signs? It was off hour (3:30-4:30 on a Monday) and there were several other tables and folks at the bar. What a great sign of a good restaurant, people always there. If I lived in the area, this would be my regular spot--lunch, dinner, and times in between!

Outstanding! My wife and I ate dinner here Friday 6/3/2011. The place was alive, busy and gave us the feeling we made the right choice for a Mexican Restaurant. We had to wait 15 minutes, they told us 20, but we were seated within 15. I order their Jambalaya special made with chicken, shrimp and sausage served with mexican rice. It was fresh, moderately spicy (as it should be), and plentiful. I boxed some up for lunch today. Served with black beans and a small salad. My wife had a glacomoli (sp) taco. Jumbo it was, extremely fresh and served with refried beans and salad on the side. She loved it. For desert we split a sopaipilla, served hot with honey and ice cream. Again, perfectly prepared. They served 3, we took one home. Without taxes, beer and margaritas, bill was $38. Great value. I will return.

The best Mexican food in PG. There are so many great choices on the food and bar menu. Try everything and you wont be disappointed. Blood orange margaritas. chili Colorado tostada, garlic shrimp, artichoke and mushroom enchiladas, and anything with there mole sauce. and the green salsa with chips.

  • Angela B.

I have been going to Pepper's for about 18 years now. The green salsa is out of this world, the chips are homemade goodness, the whole staff is like one extended family of beach bums that are very friendly and welcoming. The food never takes long to come, is unfailingly good, and the ambience is friendly and cozy (it can get a little loud on Friday nights). The mole ("molay") enchilada is usually on the specials menu, and is awesome. This is an example of an outstanding restaurant in a small town that is worth repeated visits. It's that good.

Pepper's is one of our go-to restaurants in the area. The negative reviews surprise me (most saying this isn't authentic Mexican food). Hello, if you are searching for authentic Mexican food why would you go to Pacific Grove when Salinas is a few miles away?! You can get all the authentic Mexican your heart desires there. But if you want some killer MEXI-CALI food (hence the name) come to Pepper's. The corn chowder here is absolutely outstanding! Trust me, it's not something I would normally order but do yourself a favor and get a cup. The ultimate Margaritas are also top notch (my favorite in the area). They are pricey, but one will have you buzzin. Try the chicken mole enchiladas too or the gouda quesadillas. Service here is always great. I highly recommend this restaurant!

Almost 5 stars, have to hold back due to no cilantro in the salsa!!! Visited on Cinco de Mayo, place was hoppin'. Sat at the bar or a wait of 45 mins would have ensued. Man they were mixing up a gazillion margaritas, my husband loved his, said it was potent. They made me some fresh decaf. Chips are fresh, tasty and warm. Bar staff is on the ball. I ordered chicken mole enchiladas, FABULOUS mole, not too sweet not too spicy. Loaded with big chunks of seasoned chicken. Black beans were sprinkled with chopped onions and very tasty, even the rice is very good. Accompanied by an avocado-lime salsa, nice. Plenty of food. My husband had the chile relleno and tamale, all was more than satisfactory, good consistencies. This place is an absolute favorite of Peninsula locals, plan to wait a bit on the weekends.

Every person in the place was super! and the food matched that. Staff work as a team. As a first timer, I [wrongfully] assumed the first waiter approaching us was ours. He politely answered all my questions before telling me our waiter would be there shortly -- plus he checked back several times during dinner while our waiter was occupied! The busboys did the same, and so did the hostess after the meal. Wow! Food -- The standard menu is short, the specials were long! I simply couldn't choose, so I had a couple of things with the full intention of taking some home. The waiter did make sure to tell me after I ordered, "That's a lot of food." And it was, as we saw when the food arrived. Everything arrived in order (mussels appetizer to start) and quickly, so the kitchen is clearly as efficient as the front. Delicious! I judge a Mexican restaurant by their chile verde and their chile relleno. I give those a 10 here, and the mussels were an added treat, steamed with onions, tomatoes, and garlic. My friend enjoyed his snapper special, too. (The waiter remembered without me reminding him to bring my beer with the meal, not before, and the glass was chilled.) I think we were the only tourists. Couples looked like locals who dine there frequently, as did families with small children. I'm going back, and also enjoying my leftovers tonight.

Superb entrees Great Service Comfortable atmosphere This place is the best Mexican restaurant in the United States. Well, that might be an over statement, but its the best one I have ever been to. It was so good, that I had it for dinner and then for my first meal the very next day. That could have been because I was leaving the area, but regardless, you have to be really good for me to come back twice and miss another opportunity to visit a new eatery. It was that great. Service was quick, friendly and accommodating. The complementary salsa is good, but if its too much for you ask for the milder version because they have one. Guacamole was extremely fresh and quite refreshing. My girlfriend gave major kudos to their Chicken Mole dish as I had chicken tacos, all of which were outstanding. Also, if you like fresh squeezed lemonade, make sure you try it. A highly recommended restaurant.

This place always reminds me of weekend dinners before my friends and I headed out to the party of the night. We'd load up on cheese enchiladas and tortilla soup as a precursor to a fun weekend. I always recommend this place for the tourists that are looking for a good Mexican restaurant, because their menu is pretty safe and standard. It's a trendy little place, but fun for a little or big group of friends.

Peppers is my go-to place for Mexican food in the Monterey/Pacific Grove area. I could probably happily eat ALL the time if it was possible. Their regular menu a little boring - just typical Mexican foods stuff, but they always have a super long list of specials - typically a lot of fish and seafood options - and these are fabulous. I loooove their Swordfish Fajitas. Pacific Grove tends to be a pretty sleepy town, but this place can get packed around mealtimes. Call ahead or plan to wait a while. Prices are pretty reasonable and you get a good amount of food. Yum.

We have a house in PG and visit at least once a year. We have a few favorite places to eat that we always frequent and one of them is Peppers and I love Peppers! Great food! Great chips and salsa! Awesome Margaritas! I will always suggest this to our friends and family.

Very good mexican food. Not as good as michael's, but definitely worth checking out. I recommend the seafood paella with blood orange margaritas. The burritos are hit or miss. Ive had some great meals here and have never been disappointed. Prices are average. Portions are good.

Went for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. We loved it- fresh, flavorful food. Not soggy/mushy/greasy like a lot of places. The black beans were awesome (usually don't notice them). Lots of vegetarian options, fun salsa music, and fast, friendly service. Would hit it again.

I can brag a bit and say that I have been a loyal customer here for over 25 years. I must also admit that I have been a creature of habit all this time as well......rarely straying from my standard order: 2 Cheese Enchiladas with that fabulous green sauce. I did however go through a two year phase ordering only the Chicken Nachos. I can honestly say that I rate their green tomatillo salsa as my favorite of all time. The service is ALWAYS smiley, fast and effficient. And now that they have REAL margaritas....I just have one more thing to love about this happy place.

Fun atmosphere, solid food, delicious chile (pepper!) dishes. Open a little later than the rest. Warm ambiance, customers on a Thursday night included solo diners with their laptops and requisite i-somethings, a few couples, some families with and without kids, a couple people attired in their bicycle lycra. Casual, upbeat, simple food. Sopapillas were pretty good. Mexican flan only so so.

Peppers is so much fun! I remember coming here all the time with my family as a child and it's one of the few places we still get to go back to from time to time and enjoy so much :) Scott, Lisa and the entire staff are so friendly and PG cool. The food is good and always tastes fresh. Wrap up your day with the gouda quesadilla, add some guac and a cold beer. Or spring for the fajitas and a cadillac margarita - so d'lish!

Best Mexican food in PG The nachos overflow with beans, cheese, salsa and guacamole here... you order nachos and they bring you enough to feed a family. It's a cozy, colorful, chili pepper themed Mexican restaurant with full bar. Too crowded? Order at the bar or "to go." Shrimp tacos are DE-lish, zesty and fresh! Wait staff is a bit "hit or miss" (sometimes a little disorganized but virtually always friendly) - try to have a margarita and relax, life's too short to get upset over a mixed up order (whatever you get will be fabulous anyway). If you have allergies be sure to mention it twice... just in case.

Pepper's is, by far, my favorite restaurant in Pacific Grove - so much so that the bartender gets a Sierra Nevada for my husband & a house margarita on the rocks no salt for me as soon as we walk through the door! We bring all of our out of town guests to Pepper's for their first meal of their visit...one friend went back the next day to buy a t-shirt! It can be loud & crowded, but the atmosphere is great, casual, and friendly. The staff is friendly and it really is the kind of place that makes you feel at ease. We've eaten there multiple times during one week because we just couldn't think of anything else we wanted. It's our standby because we know we'll enjoy our meal regardless. I go there for lunch sometimes during work because it's just a block away and the service is fast. I've tried all of the seafood dishes (except for the paella) and I love them all. My favorite items are the corn chowder, snapper yucatan, prawns gonzalez, carribean curry prawns, the chicken mole enchiladas, and the guacamole tacos. In fact, their guacamole is just good by the spoonful. Honestly, those are just the favorites - I've liked everything I've eaten there! My only complaint is that the chicken breast dishes can be dry, but they're still tasty. I highly recommend this restaurant.

ok, so its been a long long time since i've been here, but i seem to remeber this not being a good value for your meal. and it seemed to me that it was a bit homogenized in flavor. perhaps i should give it another try and see if my opinion has improved.

Drive through Monterey and head to Peppers in Pacific Grove instead. With a longstanding restaurant history in the area, the owners (one of which is my "brother-in-law") have created a relaxed atmosphere with an amazing lineup of food. Mexi-Cali venturing into Caribbean flavors. The seafood paella and the zesty mussels are my favorite on the menu...their dishes have the right amount of spices and kick. I would never fess up to knowing the owners unless the food was fantastic. Great drinks at the bar. Save room for the flautas and ice cream! Oh, and very kid and family friendly...My preschooler loves the soups here. Great place to bring groups to.

  • Stacy L.

Great guacamole, great fish specials, great service, great margaritas, and great sopapillas. I've come here with a group twice now, and the experience has always been excellent. Unlike downtown Monterey, where parking is difficult to find or metered, parking in this area of Pacific Grove is extensive and free. Kids are welcome, though it's not a kid-centric place.

  • Melissa F.

It's good Mexican food. The only reason I don't give it 4 stars is that they use too many onions for my taste. I generally get the enchiladas and think they are some of the best around.

  • Eric G.

One of the better Mexican restaurants in the area. The pricing is kind of high for Mexican. My friends tried to explain the prices by saying it's upper scale Mexican food. Apparently "upper scale" means "we raised the prices" and that's about it. The service was adequate and the food was...well...Mexican food. I don't think I have ever come out of a Mexican restaurant saying "That was the most amazing food I've ever had!" I always have to say "That was the most amazing MEXICAN food I've ever had!" because...sorry Mexico...I always feel a sense of dread after eating it, no matter how good it was. Maybe it's the 2,000 calories per serving or the fact that I simply can't stop myself when a waitress puts unlimited tortilla chips and salsa in front of me. In my vocabulary, "unlimited" or "bottomless" is more of a challenge than a description and I have to eat each bowl they bring out. So I guess I shouldn't blame the restaurant, but I'm still giving it 4 stars. Sorry Mexican food, but I don't think you'll ever get 5 stars from me.

    (4)

I am such a Mexi food snob, and I have no respect for a Mexi place that doesn't fry their own corn chips. And a place that isn't even using real tortillas?? Phewy. My taco was encased in some flat, flaky, pastry-like thing. More taco bell than over priced trendy-Mex. The rice was light pink and just tasted like white rice.

Service is always excellent - servers, and bus people. Food is very good - seafood tacos are my favorite. Prices very reasonable. Margaritas are killer. There is a reason this place is always crowded.

One of the better Mexican-ish restaurants in the area. Not over the top great, but hey, this isn't San Diego (if this place was in S.D., it'd get 2.5 stars). They have a lot of specials, so variety is good.

After a lovely day at the ol' aquarium my fiance and I decided we should fill our bellies. I had read the reviews of this place and figured we'd give it a try. As a native Tucsonan I am extremely picky about my "mexican" food. However this place makes no claims to being authentically Mexican. In fact they're "Mexicali" a word which usually turns me off. Well long story short we went, we very much enjoyed the quaintness of the place, the quick service, the salsa and the food! MMM. Mole is hard to do right, but they've got it. It's not so "chocolately" as some places, which makes it perfecto. I was impressed. The prices initially turned me off (about 9-18 per entree) so we decided to split and get an appetizer. Good choice. I suggest you do this. They bring you enough food to easily feed two (average) people, I make no claim to them feeding two Goliaths. Best parts (aside from the food): 1. Sangria (or the Margaritas) 2. Lots of parking in the lot next door 3. Close enough to the touristy spots, far enough from the tourists

Cozy, friendly Mexican joint in the heart of PG. We've eaten here several times and always had a great experience. The food is fresh and the margaritas are strong. Sure, I've had better Mexican food, but this is really good for sleepy little Pacific Grove! Check it out when you're down in the area. They've also got a great bathroom. That always wins me over!

The bomb! Its not just a local favorite- because I see people i know drive 30 mins to this place. I've never been disappointed. Tacos al carbone is my fav. And the blood orange margaritas are to die for. And i don't care for tequila! Try and make reservations if you can plan ahead-it is ALWAYS packed. And they are closed on Tuesdays-which a lot of people forget.

I stayed at a sweet B&B down the block (Seven Gables Inn, check it out) and we wanted something within walking distance but were more than pleasantly surprised by the fresh, colorful and creative food at this locals spot. The service was friendly and attentive, the choices were varied and original, and the preparation itself was out of this world. Highly recommended respite from the surplus of Italian menus to choose from at the inn...

we waited about 30 minutes for a table on a saturday night, but boy, was it worth it. we ponied up to the bar for our wait, and ordered a margarita that we dubbed "the 90-minute margarita" because it was strong and you needed that amount of time to drink it. i had the salmon tacos. they were delicious, they came with rice and beans and guacamole. i was very full, but still (somehow) had room for flan for dessert.

After reading some great reviews on Yelp I decided to give this place a try while visiting the Monterey Peninsula. It was even better than I imagined. The place was quite busy on a Friday night and a tad cramped but my sweetie and I were seated after only a 10-minute wait (props to the hostess who recognized us after we went on a short walk and seated us right away). The atmosphere was warm and inviting, the service excellent, and they had a good selection of beers and liquor. The bar looked like a fun place to meet up with a friend for drinks with a lively atmosphere, although it's in the front so there's lots of traffic from people entering the restaurant. While the permanent menu was pretty standard tex-mex fare, they had a photocopied insert with a long list of scrumptious looking specials. We only ordered from that list and tried the sweet corn chowder and the artichoke and mushroom enchiladas, both excellent. I wish we had space for the pineapple flan as it sounded intriguing but alas we were quite full (and a bit tipsy) and left without dessert to take a romantic walk along the shoreline.

My wife and I came here for a late dinner while on our honeymoon. We called ahead and they were able to seat us within 15 minutes. Blood Orange Margaritas are to die for! The service was kind and we loved the chalkboard in the bathrooms. This was recommended to us by an elderly lady who knew her Mexican restaurants. Noisy, but still awesome atmosphere. Go now!

Although Scott no longer works there, this place is still as we remember from our days at 121 1/2 Forest - 300SqFt of heaven. The cheese enchilada rocks. Long live Peppers. They pioneered "Fresh Mex" in the '80s. Way better than the Chip Hotel. This place was packed by 5pm on a Sunday. The locals love it. Nearly tourist free.

Went there this last weekend. they were busy but not flustered. They had services dialed in and were fast. most important the food was delicious. Wife had Chicken Nachos and she is a big critic usually but loved it. I had the Sante fe Enchildas. MMMMMM. Cheese, peppers, onions, olives, other goodness covered in green sauce with cheese, sour cream and guac with some black beans and rice on the side. I will make this a regular stop every time I am near it.

Great blood orange margarita's! My girlfriend and I got drunk as hell off of a pitcher of them. The bartender has an attitude and thinks she's a little prettier than she really is. Definitely not very friendly. The food is good...but I'd consider it "white person mexican food" (I'm white btw). Given that 10 minutes away in Seaside you've got little mexican cantina's with the no frills "real stuff" for under $10.00 for two people, Peppers is pricey in comparison...but like I said its good and since its in Pacific Grove you run very little risk of getting shot. We go here often.

I really wanted to like this place. Really. But, you see, I know what authentic and really good Mexican food is. Does anyone remember "Zoraidas" that used to be a hole-in-the-wall Mexican food joint, on Broadway in Seaside? Now, that was Mexican food! I so miss that place. As for this place, I can only surmise that Gringos and Gringas, alike, have never experienced real Mexican food. On my friend's recommendation, I ordered the mushroom and artichoke enchiladas. It was served in a runny, messy sauce. The mushroom (I only identified one)felt slippery, and the artichoke felt like I was eating thistle. It was a total bust to my taste buds. Hating to waste food, I took half of it home for a later time. The refried beans were okay, but nothing like Zoraidas. They had a strange spice to them, and I was disappointed. My other friend had a grilled chicken tostada. I had food envy. That looked decent enough. The salsas are good, though, I will give them that. I'll try the tostada another time. Overall, I still long to find a good Mexican restaurant on the Monterey Peninsula. So far, all I can find is mediocre. What can I say? My Nana cook make some seriously good beans, enchiladas and tortillas. She ruined my palate! By the way, the leftovers were as lousy as when they were fresh. I ate them, but not with relish.

Wow! Killer!! All 4 of loved our meals! We were stuffed to the fullest. Service was great, cute little place w/awesome food. My sis in law said her nachos were the best she ever had and so did my bro in law. Hubby said chicken burrito had great flavor and my huevos rancheros were very good. So glad we went here (detour on our 17 mile drive).

This place seems to be a locals favorite. Since it is my grandfather-in-laws favorite, we find ourselves here ever so often. Always packed, the place features and interesting menu at a low cost. My grandfather-in-law loves their martinis (try the blood orange martini! Yum) My dish here is the beef tacos. These suckers are huge! The food isn't out of this world, but you leave satisfied, and hey, we go to make the old man happy...

Once again, I have found myself dining on a lot of Mexican food lately when I joined my coworkers at Peppers yesterday afternoon for lunch. Ironically, while I live right down the block from Peppers, I actually come here only rarely. Yesterday's lunch reminded me why--while the food is generally decent, the service leaves much to be desired. I usually order the chicken mole enchiladas at Peppers, a popular choice at their dinner service. These are amazing, with the perfect hints of heat and sweet in the mole sauce. Unfortunately, one is unable to order these during the lunchtime service. This is a major minus for me--in fact, it cost this review a whole star, mostly because of the utter disdain with which the servers explain that the mole enchiladas aren't available during lunch service because the sauce isn't ready. While I understand that a good mole sauce requires a lot of time simmering to perfection, I can't imagine that a restaurant that offers mole enchiladas EVERY night, doesn't have SOME mole sauce readily available during the lunchtime rush. It's utterly pretentious for Peppers to withhold this delicious offering from their lunchtime menu. Now that I've gotten that off my chest, let's get to the review, and it's a doozy. Unable to order my mole enchiladas, I perused the menu several times trying to find a suitable alternative. After much debate, I finally settled on a cup of soup and a quesadilla for lunch today. Unfortunately, the servers forgot about my soup, though it was actually pretty good when it finally did arrive. The quesadilla on the other hand, was rather unappetizing--and surprisingly small considering its cost. Now I'm a big fan of quesadillas, and I love the concept behind Peppers' revolving quesadilla du jour. But call me conservative, I don't appreciate this Mexicali approach to quesadillas whereby it's apparently necessary to add every vegetable under the sun to a quesadilla. The server told me the day's quesadilla was Jack cheese, so imagine my dismay when I bit into a quesadilla containing mushrooms, artichoke, black olives (which I DESPISE!), tomatoes and, lastly, some barely-there Jack cheese. The quesadilla was simply overpowered by the vegetables. The heaping portion of pico de gallo and guacamole on top of the quesadilla didn't help either and these toppings similarly overwhelmed the dish--and, even worse, made it rather soggy and unappetizing. Adding insult to injury, I felt this small dish was grossly overpriced--$7--but this seems par for the course at Peppers where my friend deduced a single a la carte taco costs $7. I think the biggest problems I have with Peppers are value and service. For dinner service, I think the prices are somewhat reasonable, but for lunch, I think you can most certainly find a better value elsewhere. Personally, I try to eschew Peppers during lunch, save for the occasional work function. During dinner, I don't feel so bad paying $15 for a two enchilada combo--and I can get the elusive mole sauce. Regardless of the value, I can't forgive the service during either lunch or dinner. Servers here are entirely too aloof. From forgotten dishes to incorrect orders, I've always had SOMETHING go wrong with my meal at Peppers. Personally, Peppers makes a pretty decent dinner, but skip it for lunch. While the food is pretty good--save the unusual quesadilla combos--the price is not. You can find better lunchtime values--and service--elsewhere.

when folks ask us where to eat in pacific grove, we send them to peppers. the chili verde, enchiladas, black beans, corn chowder, red snapper, swordfish, iced tea, and coconut fudge ice cream are terrific. service is superb, even when very busy, and it is often busy and noisy in there.

Serviceable, friendly Mexican food in P.G. Not much point in describing the food -- I guarantee you've had it hundreds of times before. Portions are way too big. Salsa is a highlight, fresh and more bite than your average Mexican place. Great margaritas. And occasionally, if you're lucky, you can run into Clint Eastwood.

Very tasty food! I loved their salsas that they put out with chips at the beginning of the meal. The place was PACKED and we got seated pretty promptly and were waited on promptly as well. The wait staff was attentive through our meal but I did feel a bit rushed towards the end of our meal like they were trying to get rid of us. I understand they needed the table for someone else but we weren't there that long and I felt as if we were being shoved out for someone new. Oh well. Also, pretty decent margarita.

My best friend and I went here when we were on vacation for the weekend in Monterey. We both ordered the steak tacos and they were delicious. The only bad thing was the alcohol. I ordered what I thought was a pina colada, but they don't have a blender!!! It was gross, way too alcoholic. Aside from that, it was great!

Wow! I brought a few friends and promised that no one would leave hungry or disappointed...home run! Everybody loved it and we had a great time. Went here last night for the first time and LOVED it...already planning my return. It was crowded but we only had to wait about 5 or 6 minutes! I couldn't decide between the chicken mole enchiladas and the mushroom artichoke enchiladas so my server let me have one of each. I LOVED the mushroom artichoke ones the most, though I still loved the mole.... my friend got the garlic garlic shrimp and it was yummy too. Glad I finally made it out to sleepy PG... I need to go to more restaurants there!!

We love Peppers and have been eating at Peppers for the last 9 years. Every time we visit Pacific Grove, we have dinner here! The food and service is EXCELLENT and the food is always consistently delicious! We celebrated my son's 21st birthday at Peppers last April (we were all in Monterey for the Sea Otter Classic-my son is a cyclist) and they accommodated our party of 20 fantastically! The best service, servers and Mexicali food in Pacific Grove!

I have loved this place for YEARS! The food is excellent, the wait staff do a damn good job under considering its usually a packed house and the margaritas are amazing! Be prepared to wait, make reservations, and come hungry! If I've ever recieved less then perfect service here it is not a big deal because the consistancy of a good time makes up for it!

salsa and chips were the greatest ! we had just harvested a ton of tomatillos from our garden, so it was my first experiment in cooking them .... I should have asked Peppers for their recipe for salsa because it was waaaaay better than mine !! The lunch combinations were HUGE and pretty good. We like to have things we can't make at home, so tried the chilis rellenos and tamales. Both were delicious and the chili was one of the biggest I have ever seen, never mind eaten :-) I'm not a big margarita fan, but after seeing all of the raves for the blood orange margarita, I may have to give it a try the next time. The only downside for me is that I thought it was a bit pricey; I had no complaints about the taste of the food.

We keep going back to Peppers for the fun atmosphere, the tasty food, and the margaritas made with fresh citrus juice. I think every time we go there we go through two bowls of the green salsa which has flavors of lime and just enough spice to keep it interesting. To make it even better, it's locally owned and employs other Pagrovians who are friendly and welcoming. No wonder Peppers has been a local favorite for 20 years!

  • Tatyana G.

Food was A-OK, service and atmosphere were excellent. I have to say their salsas were fresh and tasty. If I was rating salsas and service, I would add another star. As far as the rest of the food -- beef burrito, chicken enchilada, chicken tostada -- it was good food and plenty of it, but there was nothing outstanding about it. Perhaps, we are so spoiled in San Diego with good Mexican food, that other places seem bleak in comparison. I was expecting food to be more exciting based on reviews of others and prices. Definitely a good place for a late night dinner and drinks... not too late, I think they close between 9 and 10pm depending on how busy the place is.

So good. I got the two taco combo one steak the other chicken. I liked the chicken better. They are made with homemade toritias and with black beans or re-fried beans. The best part about the night was that at 8:30 on a Saturday evening we got right in and seated. After that we had our order taken quite soon and then within 10 minutes we had our food. Everything was so great. service, food, and atmosphere.

when i lived in pacific grove, we would eat at Pepper's every other week. it was a staple in our household. i would order the shrimp in a garlic sauce and it came with warm flour tortillas. soooo good. the shrimp never tasted fishy or had a rubbery texture. always fresh and perfectly prepared. their quesadillas were good. tacos and enchiladas. i liked their rice. i'm not a big mexican/spanish rice person, but Pepper's rice seemed to hit the spot. i also liked their margaritas. back in the day before they had a full liquor selection they made them with agave wine. cold and sweet as it slid down the throat. great flavor.

Peppers has excellent Mexican food and margaritas, and a bustling atmosphere for dinner that lets you know you are somewhere special. Pacific Grove is a sleep town, but you certainly wouldnt know it sitting inside Peppers on a Friday night with a pitcher of Margaritas and chips and salsa in front of your face chatting away with your friends while you await your entrees. I loved my steak tacos, the meat was tender and had incredible flavor. I was stuffed at the end of my meal and was quite pleased with how a weekend away from San Francisco had started. I would highly recommend Peppers for a group of friends, a date spot, or anyone just craving great mexican food. I will be back, and highly suggest you go to Peppers to see what all the talk is about for yourself.

Why Mexican food cannot be this good in Boston, I will never know. Everything we had at Peppers was excellent. The fish tacos came with a huge amount of guacamole. The mushroom and artichoke enchiladas was inventive and tasty. The Snapper Yucatan was just a touch spicy and delightfully tender and full of citrus. Their black beans were superb. The staff was extremely friendly and even smiled and helped with our stroller when we walked in with a baby.

Hands down, the best mex-cali food on the Monterey Peninsula. Tucked on a side street, this nondescript restaurant is a major local favorite. When we lived in Carmel in the mid-90s, would eat here almost always once a week. Just ate here again yesterday, and the food is every bit as good as always. DELICIOUS! Green and Red salsa. Great chips. Generous portions. Every dish loaded with explosive flavor. Anyone not giving Peppers 5-stars probably has had their taste in Mexican food trained by standard chain-resturant fare. If you want fresh, flavorful Mexican, you want Peppers. Beware dinner on weekends will have a long wait, so get there early.

  • Libs G.

I'd call it more Cali-Mexican. With a dearth of good, cheap, authentic places to eat Mexican food in Monterey and it's environs, I'd skip Peppers. That said, I did have a nice meal there--a beef taco with black beans. Nothing spectacular, but it wasn't bad, either. This place is very popular with tourists, has a full bar, and always has a long wait.

Who can compete? What impressed me firstly was the specials menu, an entire page of handwritten items, aside from the permanent menu. The other South American influences and even New Orleans style, shows the daring creativity the owners have. As said by others, the salsas were flavorful and spicy enough for the tame spice lover--if you want more spice they provide bottled hotness. We both had fahitas dishes, one with salmon tacos (a special) and another, prawns in a diced pepper mixture. The corn tortillas were good. I have lived in the East Bay (of SF) my whole life, and we have never had a place like this up here. Cafe de la Paz, in Berkeley, is more upscale and a bit different, so not comparable, and Picante, our best Mexican restaurant (authentic itself) is also different. Peppers is special!

  • Rachael D.

Really tasty and it seemed like healthy-mex but still satisfying when you crave Mexican food. I agree with the onion comment--I love 'em, but they are a bit over-used here. Friday night...place was packed. Would make reservations if you're able to. Spicy salsa was great and they had a really nice mild one too. The top-shelf margarita was top notch (house one, not so much) and the service was attentive and friendly.

It was 16 years since I last eat here and it was everything I remembered. It was the first place I choose to eat in town so that says a lot on its own. If you are looking for Tex-Mex, take your sorry ass to Texas and eat their crappy version of Mexican food. This is great MexiCali food, much closer to authentic Mexican and there isn't a bad thing on the menu. It isn't huge, the food is very good and well priced so expect to wait for a table on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night. With the bar right inside the door, the wait can be enjoyable and will go by quickly. The beer list isn't extensive but will do. The sangria rocks as do the multiple margarita options. If you are having a hard time choosing from the menu, I recommend the Mission District burrito and the Grilled Prawns.

  • Zachary A.

My local GF loves this place. I prefer, authentic hole-in-the-walls, with tasty family recipes and huge portions. Sorry, I am spoiled by SoCal Mexican Food....which NEVER stuffs rice inside my burrito. Peppers is touristy, but the chips/salsa is good. The Shrimp Fajitas was not what I expected: crispy, sizzling, piping-hot, etc. Here, it was more like a prawn-based, warm soup. Okay.... On a scale of one-to-ten....with ten being authentic - Peppers ranks a 5.

I cannot wait to be back in Monterrey to eat here again. We were looking for a restaurant one night and saw a line out of this restaurant which is literally a hole in the wall. We decided to check it out and was shocked it was only a 10 min wait. We were seated and although this place is tiny it felt more cozy cute than claustrophobic. We ordered drinks and food and realized why there was a wait outside, the food and drinks were fresh and amazing. Along with the Fishwife this is our now our go to place when visiting Monterrey

Alimentos que le hará enamorarse We popped in on Saturday evening and the place was pretty packed, there was a 45 minute wait... Definitely worth the wait. You can call ahead to reserve seating, which a lot of the locals seem to do. Some spaces became available at the bar and the bartender made them available to us so this took some time off our wait. We received some chips & salsa to start off with, the salsa had a great flavor a bit spicy but not to overpowering. We also order some chipotle calamari to start off with, which was pretty tasty but I would of preferred cocktail sauce over tartar sauce... But you really didn't need any sauce the flavor on the calamari breading was tasty. My bf ordered the swordfish fajitas (Special), I ordered the artichoke/mushroom enchiladas, and my mom ordered the enchilada platter. Everything came out pretty promptly, and portion sizes were rather large. I was pretty full on the calamari but I munched down my two enchiladas (Ewwwwy gooooey loveliness) and took home my beans & rice. My mom & bf both really enjoyed their plates, and didn't have much for left overs. I can see why this is a local spot, everything was amazing; from the service to the food. We would definitely come back here if we were in the area.

We really enjoy visiting PG because of the quaint relaxed atmosphere that surrounds it! A strict 15mph speed limit all downtown is a hint at what I'm talking about. We've driven past this place and have seen the line out the door and around the corner, so when we arrived into town late and saw the line had settled, we knew where to go! We were promptly seated and served our drinks. They don't make micheladas here which was a little bit of a downer. They offered me a Negra Modelo instead. As an app we had the local calamari. The calamari was fried in a Mexican style batter and served with a spicy chipotle sauce. Piping hot and very crunchy! For my dinner I ordered the steak tacos. They were recommended by our waiter Chuy! They were fantastic. Thicker cuts of steak presented very well on the plate. (Refer to my pictures) my wife had the seafood tacos (shrimp tonight) and they were presented the same way. For a Mexicali cuisine, this place was top notch. I really enjoyed the whole experience. The service was impeccable. We will definitely come here again when looking for this style of Mexican food!!

This place was great! Great service and great food! We stayed in a house that was walking distance to this restaurant in Pacific Grove. They were very friendly and were able to accommodate our party of 18 people. They brought the kids' food first which was appreciated. The margaritas were strong which we enjoyed. I would definitely go back!

Another place I loved going to in PG... miss it, too. Best Mexicali food in the Monterey area. Drawback to some but I found the small size of the is establishment pleasant and intimate. Combo plates were a win. Was just in the Monterey are in June (after ten years) and Peppers was closed on the only day we could go ~sigh~

I love a Mexican restaurant that stars with very fresh and tasty tortilla chips instead of the old, hard ones you find elsewhere. We hadn't eaten year in several years, but we found it to be just as good and friendly as in the past. We had the creamed corn soup - excellent, and the chicken nachos, which were also excellent. That filled us up, so we stopped there. Service was friendly and the restaurant was comfortable, if a bit noisy from kids running around. Don't miss the Tessutti Zoo across the street for fun shopping.

Got drinks and combo plates!! Wow was it good! Drinks was Cosmo and a suzua margarita simply amazing ! Would go back! The plates were amazing I got cheese enchiladas and boyfriend got the beef! Super fun lunch spot! We walked from the aquarium in Monterey and enjoyed our lunch very much so! I had the fish tacos (to die for!) and my boyfriend had a pork burrito. We also had the stuffed/grilled pepper which was delightful. I wasn't a huge fan of the blood orange margarita but should have specified my tequila preference. Either way, it was a great time!

Am I in Texas? These portions are HUGE!! Hubby ordered 1 cheese enchilada, 1 tostada, and beans and rice. The food was enough to feed 3 people. Thank goodness I ordered the black bean chili. It was about 2 cups of chili (only complaint was they were way to heavy on the onions, but otherwise great). Hubby's food was well worth the price, but $10 for the chili was too much. I also think it was supposed to come with rice based on where it was listed in the menu, but I just got the bowl and 2 corn tortillas. Overall I would come back here.

Fun, casual place to get some good Mexican food. We ordered the fish tacos, which were OKish. They were pretty much just grilled salmon with taco toppings. Nothing special. More standout were the margeritas and the pickled habaneros (ask for them!).

I have been here a few times. I consider myself a bit of a Mexican food expert and it's only semi authentic and not the best I have had. It's good, but not my favorite. Service is okay, they are kid friendly but some of the staff seemed less then thrilled about us coming in with our triplets. Liked their chips and combination plates.

There are a few places in the area that, when I get asked about them, I say negative things. However, a lot of these negative things come second-hand and, though I preface these comments with the fact that they're second-hand, I still feel inclined to actually go out and try the place I've been talking so much crap about it. Peppers was, until very recently, one of those places. I mean, it's in PG, which is probably whiter than even Carmel, so you can't expect really good Mexican food. We come to PG to eat sometimes, and they do have some very good restaurants, but I would have never trusted the Mexican food here. But with competition in Old Monterey catering to the same tourist crowds (Turtle Bay, Papa Chano's), I thought it would be, at worst, mediocre. I was wrong. This was so, so bad. The one positive was the service. The waiter was very friendly, helpful, and got everything right. We started at the bar while waiting (because, I guess, there's always a wait, even when you get there at 5:30), and the bartender was also good; she actually brought over our tabs without asking when our table got called. The atmosphere is, in my eyes, atrocious. It's really loud due to the high ceilings. It's crowded, because they insist on pushing tables up into each other in every available space, including ours which was right up against the server station. And the waiting area is a bench, so people overflow into a section by the window in the bar, and outside. I had a margarita while here. It was pricey. I would never have ordered it if I knew it was going to so expensive. Totally gross. At first, I got all tequila, so I stirred it a bit. After a while, it was just bitter. Later though, it got watered down from the ice, and was drinkable. The bottled beer, for what it's worth, is not absurdly priced, and they have a decent selection. The food was absolutely the worst part. I mean, I didn't think anyone in this county could make Mexican food this bad seeing that there's some genuinely good Mexican restaurants around. I'll start with my wife's: the Veracruzana (they call it something slightly different, but that's what it's supposed to be). Normally this is stewed whitefish with tomatoes, peppers and olives over a bed of rice. It's one of her favorite dishes, and she's gotten it in Seaside and been satisfied. This version used capers instead of olives (?) and smothered the rice in canned green chiles. Why green chiles? I don't know; I guess they were already taking liberties with the capers thing, so they just kept going with it to try and save some money. Both she and I love green chiles, but not canned. If you've ever had fresh, then you can taste the difference, and these were canned. Mine was the mole enchiladas. This was as though whoever came up with the recipe had never had mole. I understand there are differences between the various styles of mole. I'm not expecting brown sauce that tastes like a Hershey's bar, but I do have an expectation of what it should generally taste like. This mole sauce tasted like canned enchilada sauce with a bit of sugar, and burned onions. The chicken inside was dry. The black beans tasted canned, and they inexplicably top them with sour cream and giant pieces of chopped red onion. The best part though: they put a salad pepper on the side. In case I wanted it to taste like vinegar, I guess? The dishes were $16 & $14, respectfully. So we paid about 40% more for lower quality food. I understand that a place in PG has more overhead but, if you're going to make the food this poorly, then don't even operate. People don't absolutely need Mexican food when they come to PG, and there's no good reason to give them stuff like this and send them home to Hayward or Stockton thinking that they got good Mexican food, when they actually ate this. If you really insist on eating Mexican food in this area, we have good options. Move your Yelp map east a little bit. Seaside is not that far, and you'll end up with a much better experience without the high prices, low quality food and hour wait to sit at a crowded table.

Fresh ingredients served hot and fast. Try the spicy pork and blood orange margarita. Loved the use of chopped romaine lettuce on the tostada instead of the typical shredded iceberg. Excellent guacamole. Salsas are hotter than most and the chips are crispy but a little greasy.

Loved this place, great combo plate and margheritas were awesome. Wish we lived there, in from out of town, would eat there all the time!!

Went today for dinner at Peppers, I had read the reviews before going to Peppers. And to be honest either people are not picky or just dont care about the quality of the food. I order the Salmon tacos, no flavor at all. The salsa that came with the tacos was tasteless with huge chunks of onion and tomatoes . We also ordered the guacamole dip, no salt or spice to it. My husband order some crunchy tacos and really didnt enjoyed them either. Too pricey for the quality of the food. Definitely wont be going in again.

Have the Chile Verde! Not only is it delish, it's a big plate! You can literally share it with someone but you know I didn't! This is also a good place to come and get a drink, they mix 'em up really well here, and are heavy handed with the shots, lol. All in all, a nice little find while we were in PG. Just an added note - the staff and service are excellent, everything arrived very fast and our waiter was very attentive and caring. Sweet!

Best Mexican food I've had in the area! In a cute location with very friendly service. My favorite is the chicken tacos. Great taco shells. I would give this restaurant more than 5 stars if I could!

Went there for the first time this week as I was close by and needed I quick lunch. I really liked their atmosphere. It is tucked away on a lower level of the building close to Union Bank at the side street off of Lighthouse Avenue in Pacific Grove. I was surprised once I went in finding that it is bigger than expected. I had a Chicken Tostada which was nicely presented, large and tasted good. They do use cooked and cut chicken for it while I prefer freshly sautéed or barbequed chicken. They served tortilla chips with two types of salsa, a red one and a green one which were very good. Overall a very decent place and I consider going again if I look for a place in that area.

Please do not mistaken this restaurant for Mexican. I don't know what Mexicali food is...but I don't like it! It's worse than Tex Mex. Americanized and watered down Mexican food is what Peppers is. I came here once over a year ago based on a recommendation and was unimpressed. I tried to give it another chance since everyone here on yelp raves about it. I just don't understand. Why yelpers? Why? The dishes I had lacked flavor and my friend's "fajitas" didn't come on a sizzling plate. It was swimming in a bowl of liquid!!!! It was disgusting. Save yourself the trouble and avoid this restaurant. Unless you don't like authentic Mexican food and would like to eat "tacos," "burritos," and "enchiladas." And yes...those quotes are intentional. These are not real tacos, burritos or enchiladas! Everything is just covered in a thick layer of cheese to mask the real flavors. Peppers, you will not fool me three times!

This place made my love Mexican food. Little pricey, but the way they cook their beef is great. Their beef Tacos are to die for.

This place should be called BEAN, they serve you beans with a side of beans. This place is overpriced and the food is blah. I gave it two stars because the bathroom was very clean.

yahoo.com/food/19-ways-t… Just saw this article today in Yahoo and made me think of peppers in Pacific Grove! I wish I would have read this article before hand!

LOVE! My favorite Peninsula Mexican restaurant, even though it isn't strictly authentic. I particularly like that they use real lettuce instead of the chopped iceberg lettuce most Mexican places use. Funny story - I came here once with a Colombian friend and had to translate between he and the Mexican waiter.

My co-worker and I were invited by the owner to stop by here. We met her and the bartender the night before at the Cannery Row Brewery in Monterey. Peppers is located about a mile away from Cannery Row in Pacific Grove on Forest Ave. My co-worker and I wanted to surprise them because the night before we told them we couldn't stop by because we had a training class. Well, our training class let out early and we wanted to surprise them. We ordered the signature Ultimate Margarita that they had told us about the night before: Patron Silver, Patron Citronge and fresh margarita mix: $12. As a frame of reference, I had a similar drink in Mammoth and it cost me $24!!! The drink was so good we had two, although we were pressed for time. The drink had top shelf liquor, and hand made margarita mix. We also had freshly fried chips and nice salsa: 5 Stars. The ambiance was down as evidenced by the dope sign and cool bar. Peppers is a quaint place and only has a few tables: 5 Stars. The service was excellent. The first bartender took care of us until the owner and normal bartender arrived @ 4 pm (we had to leave to catch our flight @ 4:30). The owner recognized us, but the bartender took a while, and said ohhhh, "The Suits!" - LOL!!! I would make Peppers my normal hang out if I lived in the area. The restaurant is not touristy like Monterey and Cannery Row up the street. The place is quaint, the bar is cool and the owner and bartender are very nice. Who knows, you might start here, meet six chicks inc one from Australia, and close down Segovias - LMFAO!!!

Big portions and everything from the chips to the entrees was delicious and fresh. The mango salsa that came with my chicken was especially refreshing on such a hot day. My husband had the fish with garlic and they don't joke around with the amount of garlic, but he loved it. Service was also friendly. Will definitely be back when we are near the area.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
